Dads, Have You Done “The Big Snip”? – Cast of Dads Podcast #24

Cast_of_Dads_episode24

As all 5 of the us on the Cast of Dads have recently recovered from Father’s Day, with a variety of good times and adventures, we spent some time discussing something that “cuts close” to our Dad-dom, that of “The Big Snip”. Can you guess how many of us on COD have actually had the procedure done? It’s an obviously appropriate topic for a Dad podcast, and especially appropriate right after Father’s Day, so we “cut” right to the chase in Podcast #24.

But we couldn’t spend the entire time on that topic alone. Each of us had different Father’s Day experiences and, of course, we had to dive into a bit of tech (specifically the new Apple iPhone 4 and iOS4), as we waited for Daddy Brad to join the podcast (he had a good excuse this time, he was working on a play structure for his kids).

The Topics

Here is what we bantered about (over a few beers) on Episode 24:

  1. Hey Michael, I've been subscribed to your blog for a few months now and really enjoy reading most of your posts. I have to say that it's a little disappointing to come across some of the contents included in the Cast of Dads podcasts as advertised on this site.

For what my opinion's worth, I really enjoy your take on technology and how it relates to your being a father as well as your reviews of technology and its related products. On the other hand, it's unfortunate that I have to brace myself for whatever objectionable (as I see it) topics may be listed in your posts that direct people to the Cast of Dads podcast.

Those are just my two cents…thanks for listening.

  2. Hi Ed,

Thanks for voicing your concern. The Cast of Dads podcast actually was born from technology. The members were selected to participate in a Sony project last year and the dads liked each other so much that we decided to form a podcast that talks about fatherhood, parenting, issues confronting our kids, and yes, technology from time to time. The perspectives are from 5 independent dads, each with children of different ages and with different life experiences. We talk about topics that are current (e.g., social media, bullying, birthdays, preparing your family for disasters, etc.) but also bring our own personal experiences to light during the podcast. Personally, I'm excited to be part of the bunch because I thought that a balance of tech and family is important. Yes, I write about technology…a lot…so I needed to include some parenting views and opinions as well. The podcast is a great way for us to discuss these ideas in a “casual” forum. We are starting to build more structure (we have only recorded about 26 of these to date) and will be covering a wide variety of topics.

Of course, sometimes the material we discuss can be edgy or make people uncomfortable, but that is actually an accurate reflection of life. The topic of “the Big Snip” is one that many dads must face and we actually had a balanced discussion of the pros and cons of it and why some of us elected to have the procedure done and why others didn't. It's a difficult discussion to have without getting a bit slap happy honestly.

I, of course, respect your opinion and I will share it with the other members. However, do understand that we try to talk about things that affect our daily lives. Having “hot” topics like these makes people want to listen (hopefully). I do encourage you to listen to some other podcasts of ours as we do discuss topics of great importance to dads and parents.

    Thanks,
    Michael
