Better late than never I guess! Over the past year, I have tested out and reviewed a variety of gadgets and consumer electronic devices. Most of these were hand-picked for review purposes in that they are devices that, to me, looked really interesting and intriguing. Given that there are only a few days left for shopping, I realize that this post is a bit “last minute” (but so is my holiday shopping)! I have gone through all of my reviews from 2010 and picked out some of the items that I think should be included in my 2010 Gadget Roundup …

How Car Window Tinting Is Done – A Great After-Market Upgrade

In Auto, Fix It, General, How To, Review, Safety, Security, Video by Michael Sheehan8 Comments

Getting a new car is always fun. I personally love that new car smell that comes with your purchase. And making your car more “yours” is always important. Many people will cover their cars with bumper stickers or other types of customization. Some are purely aesthetic while others not only look good but also provide an additional function like safety or the preservation of your car. Any many of these upgrades can be done days or even years after your purchase. As part of my car buying series (see here and here), I’m focusing on how consumers can save money …

Ok, I Bought A New Car, Now What? But First, A Little More About The Buying Process

A few weeks ago our 2001 Honda Odyssey died. The transmission on our 10 year old family shuttle that had “only” 130,000 miles conked out, for the second time. It had served us really well until the last year or so, and then it had developed an expensive habit of relentlessly having to visit the repair shop every few months. My wife and I finally agreed that it was time to move on. I decided to try something different in my shopping for a new car. I wanted to make it a bit more transparent and even social. I wrote …

An Interview with Ford: Understanding Safety Advances in Ford Vehicles & the Ford Focus 2012

In Audio, Auto, Family, General, Safety, Tech News, Video by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

Recently, I have been very focused on the car industry lately as I have been shopping for a new car. One of the primary items that made me want to consider a new (or newer) car as opposed to and older model is the advancement of safety features that many manufacturers have made. While many car brands have worked hard at creating and testing a variety of safety technologies, Ford might be one of the leaders of the pack. With initiatives going as far back as 1957 around air bags, Ford has definitely been doing it for a long time. …

You gotta love unscripted recordings. And how we are all at the beck & call of technology. During our live podcast, Skype decided to act like a misbehaving child and refused to let us talk. But we worked through this and just kept going with a fairly “loaded” series of topics. The result is Cast of Dads Podcast #33 “State Fairs & Skype Burps“. Note: we are always looking for sponsors! If you would like to sponsor an individual episode or a series of episodes, please do let us know. Cougars, Cars, Dirty Diapers, Fighting & Shooting Pool with a …

Buying A New Car? Here’s My Shopping Strategy with my own Dealer Incentive!

This past weekend, the transmission of my 2001 Honda Odyssey died. The car has over 130,000 miles on it and has done a fairly good job raising our family. It sort of reminds me of the latest “Modern Family” episode (see “The Old Wagon“) where they just can’t seem to part with the old family “junker”, at least until it rolls off a cliff and is totaled. Unfortunately for me, the Kelly Blue Book value of our Odyssey as a trade-in is less than the cost to have the transmission replaced. Ouch! I will be donating my Odyssey to charity …

Blazing New Trails with the TomTom XL 340S GPS

In Auto, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPhone, Mobile, Review by Michael Sheehan3 Comments

Earlier this summer, my family and I headed out on a week long family vacation up to a Dude Ranch in Northern California. As part of the trip, we had a new traveler with us, someone who would guide us on our way, let us know when we were going to arrive and provide a source of tech for the driver (me) along the way. That someone was more of a something, it was a TomTom XL 340S GPS, and I will cut to the chase, it got us to the Dude Ranch and back safe and sound (as did …

More Funny Car Videos: “Mom My Ride” & the “Swagger Wagon”

In Auto, Family, General, Humor, Video by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

On Wednesday, I posted a couple of funny advertisements coming out from Nissan. It turns out, obviously, they aren’t the first to do this. A co-worker, and mom, pointed me to a couple of other really funny videos that are specifically focused on “the family mini van.” These two particularly hit “home” with me as we have a mini van (2001 Honda Odyssey) that definitely fits into these scenarios shown in the videos. The videos “Zima – Mom My Ride” and “Swagger Wagon” by Toyota really made me laugh. “Swagger Wagon” is particularly well done. It’s a catchy tune, but …

Funny New Ads Coming from Nissan – Dads, Kids and the Nissan Maxima & Altima

In Auto, Family, General, Humor, Opinion, Video by Michael Sheehan3 Comments

I don’t normally post articles about advertising campaigns but this new campaign coming out from Nissan got my attention for a few reasons, but mainly because they are “family oriented” and funny. The first of these ads depicts a couple who just found out that they are going to have a child. The (typical?) dad’s brain starts racing as his goes out to see his flashy Nissan 370Z Coupe sitting in the driveway. He realizes that the Coupe really isn’t ideal for a family, since it is a two-seater. Watch the video below to see what he does to correct …

I LOVE the NEW Ford Motors – 2011 Explorer Unveil on Facebook I love how Ford Motors has redefined itself. The Ford Sync – a “Knight Rider” for the Rest of Us

In Audio, Auto, Cellular, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Hardware, Microsoft, Review, Safety, Video by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

Remember way back in the 80’s there was a TV show called Knight Rider where one of the two main characters was a car that talked to you and responded to your voice commands? Of course K.I.T.T. (the name of the car which stands for Knight Industries Two Thousand), did a lot more than just answer commands, he drives “himself”, can remotely come and pick you up, dodge weaponry and a bunch of really cool other things. Sounds like the perfect school taxi to me. Anyway, the reason I bring up Knight Rider is because after spending about 10 days …

My First Days with the 2010 Ford Flex – Beginning to Explore the Technology

In Audio, Auto, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Hardware, Mobile, Review, Safety by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

I have not had a new car in over 10 years. And, I had always thought that American Cars were lagging behind foreign autos in so many ways: design, styling, features and especially, technology. My perspective has now flipped about 180 degrees, especially around the technology factor. Here’s why… This is an on-going series about the 2010 Ford Flex. Ford has graciously loaned me a Flex for two weeks in order for me to fully experience not only the car, but also the technology, specifically Microsoft Sync. I have now been driving the Flex for about 3-4 days and am …
