iPhone: Jailbreaking, Application Installing, Playing, Corrupting, Panicking, Resetting and Restoring

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPhone, Software by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

The subject of this post pretty much sums it up in a nutshell. So here are the details. First a little background. I come from a very varied cell-phone history. I was a big Sidekick users but got a bit tired of it because of the closed architecture and the fact that I couldn’t make things “the way I wanted them.” So after a few generations of Sidekicks, I made the leap to Windows Mobile 5 (and then a cooked version of WM6) using the Tmobile MDA. It was a good device. I was pretty quick to “unlock” it, allowing …

iPhone App: Telekinesis – remote access your Mac through mini web apps on iPhone

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, iPhone, Open Source, Software by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

Now this code creation really wow-ed me! I was searching to find out if LogMeIn worked on the iPhone. (It does, sort of, but impossible to mimic button clicks…yet. But that is another story.) So I found a really interesting application called telekinesis (hosted at Google code) that truly impressed me. It doesn’t profess to be a Remote Control application (like VNC, Remote Desktop, LogMeIn, etc.) but rather more of a master remote “controller” for extending your reach to your Mac. Here are some high-level features (which I have tried most of): Stream music and video from your computer Screen …

iPhone Tip: How to Fast Forward or Rewind in iTunes

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, iPhone by Michael Sheehan2 Comments

It has, once again, been a long time since my last post…I have now returned from vacation in Lake Tahoe and I can get back to things. I used my iPhone a lot on vacation but there was one critical thing that I could not figure out how to do. I guess that I should have RTFM-ed on this one, but low and behold, the answer WAS right there in the manual. It was pretty obvious how to skip songs when you are playing them, you just click on the |<< or >>| buttons. But what was not so obvious …

iPhone Firmware 1.0.1 released

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPhone by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

With little fanfare, lots of anticipation and a bit of a letdown, the first firmware update from Apple for the iPhone was officially released. It looks like it was primarily a security update with no truly outwardly visible modifications. Details on what was included in the release are below…but first a couple of thoughts. It makes sense to me that this was not the huge feature-filled upgrade that everyone is waiting for. This, in my opinion, was more of a test of the distribution mechanisms (namely iTunes). So, this push was relatively small, I think only a couple of MB. …

iPhone firmware 1.1 rumors – my own debunking

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, General, iPhone, Software by Michael Sheehan2 Comments

So there is list of potential iPhone firmware updates floating around the blogosphere. Most came out around the beginning of July. It seems like an “anonymous tipster” has submitted a laundry list of updates for the next “firmware release” for the iPhone. This list has been posted and re-posted on various tech sites including: CrunchGear, MobilityToday, GearFuse, IntoMobile and others. However, after reading through it, I’m not too convinced on its legitimacy. Listed below is my point-by-point analysis of this list, and while I do think a new firmware is in the works, the list below seems to be more …

Fix-it: iTunes 7.3.1.3 install Error 2908 on Windows

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, General, iPhone, Microsoft, Software by Michael Sheehan4 Comments

Well, I’m back from a vacation in Mexico and have been catching up on things. Playing with my new 4 Gig iPhone and getting things working has taken a little bit of time. In the process of doing that, I saw that there was an update to iTunes for PC (I’m on Vista Ultimate) for version 7.3.1.3 and I ran into some pretty big errors during the upgrade process. However, I did find a solution which is documented below (found by yours truly…it might not work for you but it did for me). First, here is what FAILED: I tried …

What HighTechDad wants for Father’s Day

In Apple, Cellular, Family, Gadgets, General, Hardware, Software by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

I’m taking a side-step here away from my usual software and hardware posts to talk about something dear to my heart…selfishly enough, Father’s Day! I already have the best 3 gifts I could ever want, three wonderful daughters! Who could ask for more than that? Not me! So why this post then? Well, the other things that Dads want are usually something fun (e.g., high tech toys, gadgets, car stuff, music, sports equipment, tools, BBQ stuff…) So, I thought that I would start a list (somewhat personal) of things that I would want! (If you want my mailing address, I …

Bluetooth Internet Sharing from Windows Mobile 6 to Mac OS 10.4.9

In Apple, Cellular, Gadgets, General, Microsoft by Michael Sheehan29 Comments

In the past, there were ways to share your cell phone’s internet connection via Bluetooth on a Mac using the DUN profile on Windows Mobile 5 (sorry for the geek-speak). With the recent introduction of Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft removed that profile, thus alienating many Mac users who used to enjoy the Bluetooth tethering/internet sharing (however it sounds like they may add it back). Setting up the DUN script and “modem” was a bit of a painstaking process (which I won’t go into). However, setting up the connection with WM6 and Mac OS 10.4.9 is actually snap. Now with Windows …

New WordPress release (version 2.1) and other stuff

In Cellular, Gadgets, General, Microsoft, Open Source, Software by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

Once again, it’s been a while since I posted. I’ve been deep in “geek-dom” mainly related to Cell Phone. My wife’s old Blackberry (7100t) died so I got a Blackberry 8700c off of eBay and she is now up and running on that! It’s a great device actually. My biggest issues was a little trick that I forgot to do when re-flashing the device from a Cingular build to a Tmobile build. You have to delete the vendor.xml file in order for the install script to work. After that, it installs perfectly. I, too, have been very involved with my …

So much for my attempt to write 1 review a day…guess the holiday vacation blew a pretty big hole in that one. I will get back to that when I have time. Recently though, I have been tweaking my Tmoble MDA. I installed a new “cooked” ROM on it. But now (and I’m not sure if it is related), my battery drains incredibly quickly. Just to play it safe, I bought an extended battery which should arrive any day now. Then I think I will play around with some other new “cooked” ROMs that are out there. Haven’t “bricked” my …

Blackberry 7100t sync issues resolved

In Cellular, Gadgets, General, Software by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

My wife has as Blackberry 7100t and the other day, it just “stopped” synching with the Desktop Manager (4.1). Basically, it would connect and then just hang when trying to do a weekly update. I got on the usual forums (pinstack, blackberryforums, howardforums) and did some futile searching. However I did find that there was recently a new release of the Blackberry Desktop (version 4.2) which seems to have some nice additions to it. I figured that by upgrading to this latest version it would resolve the sync issue… …I was wrong. So, after installing the update (it’s a big …

Voice call hangups after 4 minutes on Tmobile MDA/HTC Wizard

In Cellular, Gadgets, General, Software by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

I figured that I would post this little bit of mobile phone tweaking for any users who may be searching for a solution to the following issue. Ever since I upgraded my Tmobile MDA to the “latest and greatest” rom (v 2.26), I have been plagued with dropping calls after 4 minutes. It was definitely a bug that I had encountered and it was driving me INSANE! Well, digging through HowardForums, XDA-developers and SBSH’s forums, I believe that I found the solution. I thought that I would share both the commentary on the fix as well as the .CAB file …

Sidekickin’

So, my cellphone, the Sidekick has a new life! This is first, a great gadget! Cell phone, web browsing, instant messenger, camera, PIM…even has games. Well, there has been a lot of anticipation of an upgrade to the OS which brings some nice new enhancements. The biggest one is the ability to run javascript… There has been some discusson on the hiptop forum about who has received the update and when…and the moderators of the forum kept saying that it was completely random. Well someone figured out how to “force” the update to happen. It was a bit of a …
