Review of the Perfectly Named Scott E Vest “Expedition” Jacket – An Expedition of 37 Pockets!

In Clothing, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Review, Video by Michael Sheehan12 Comments

37 pockets, that’s what the “Expedition” jacket by Scott E Vest (“SeV” for short) has. I almost think that there are more but it could be the hidden conduits and other innovative design elements that were inflating my count. I have sort of a jacket addiction, always looking for that one that will be the one that I go to time and time again. There are a few that I bounce between either for comfort or utility or based on the weather. I now have one that may rise above the rest. The Expedition is now the one that I …

How To Get the UDID/UUID of your iOS Device – Even In A Panic

In Apple, Application, Cellular, Consumer Electronics, Fix It, Gadgets, General, Hardware, How To, HTD Tech Tip, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Software by Michael Sheehan18 Comments

Most iOS developers know that in order to “activate” your iOS device (e.g., iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) to use the latest beta of iOS 5, you need to have your UDID/UUID officially registered with Apple in their Development center. I learned this the hard way as I had not recorded it and had installed the iOS beta 1 and was suddenly in a screen that said that my device was not a registered device. And, I could find absolutely no way to get the UDID/UUID from iTunes or the device itself. What is the UDID/UUID? It’s essentially a unique identifier …

HighTechDad’s 2011 Father’s Day Gift Guide – Products I Have Reviewed & Like

In Apple, Consumer Electronics, Family, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mobile, Review, Sony by Michael Sheehan3 Comments

Father’s Day is almost upon us and I wouldn’t be doing my part for the Dads out there if I didn’t put together a Father’s Day Gift Guide. Gifts are obviously very personal in nature so I can’t tell you what to get your dad. What I can do, however, is provide some ideas on some things that might make your dad smile a bit more and potentially appeal to the “HighTechDad” inside of him. I won’t be recommending things that I haven’t actually tried, used, reviewed or have myself. That would, honestly, be quite silly. I might recommend some …

‘Twas the Night Before Mother’s Day – A Poem

In Apple, Family, General, Humor, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Parenting, Video by Michael Sheehan2 Comments

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and me, being a HighTechDad, wanted to celebrate it in my own techie way. Obviously, I’m a big fan of Apple and the products that they have produced. So I thought that I would write a little twist on “Twas the Night Before Christmas” with a bit of an Apple and Mother’s Day spin! Before I jump to the written words, below you can see my (feeble) attempt to read it on video. Don’t worry, I’m not going to quit my day job and read poetry for a living! ‘Twas the Night Before …

10 Ways to Use FaceTime with the iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPod Touch or Mac That You Might Not Have Thought Of

In Apple, Application, Cellular, Consumer Electronics, Family, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mobile, Software, Tablet, Video by Michael Sheehan4 Comments

If you have a Mac, or an iPhone or now an iPad 2, you probably have heard of FaceTime. This is Apple’s foray into video conferencing but with a heavy consumer focus. FaceTime was first launched with the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch, and then rolled out to the Mac as a beta. Then the Mac version made it into the new App Store that is now on Snow Leopard. And, most recently, the new iPad 2 has it FaceTime built in since the iPad 2 now has forward and rear-facing cameras.   10 Ways to Use FaceTime with …

How To Fix “The Required File Cannot Be Found” Error When Syncing an iPhone or iPod Touch

In Apple, Consumer Electronics, Fix It, Gadgets, General, Hardware, How To, HTD Tech Tip, iPhone, iPod, Software by Michael Sheehan48 Comments

Every since I had to restore my iPhone 4 from a backup, I have been having a pesky error message popping up each and every time I would sync my iPhone with iTunes on my Mac. It cryptically said “The iPhone [insert your iPhone name here] cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found.” Nothing more. No error message to search for. Nada. A quick Google search on that error, however, produced some good results, and, in the end, fixed my issue, so I figured I would share and prevent future head-pounding-on-the-desks from others. The fix is incredibly easy. …

Dads are Ready for Summer! Road Trips, Teen Celebrities, Music Madness, Spring Sports & More – Cast of Dads Podcast #41

In Audio, Cast of Dads, Family, Ford, General, Giveaway, Hardware, Humor, Intel, iPod, Opinion, Parenting, PodCast, Sony by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

The Dads are definitely getting back into the swing of things, finally able to get together to talk about the latest and greatest things happening to us and our families. Obviously, our opinions and advice fly like t-balls in the Spring but you have to listen to the Cast of Dads podcast #41 “Summer is Almost Upon Us” for all of our sagely advice. I just got back from a road trip down to LA (which I will write a bit more about the actual transportation later) where the highlight was not only visiting Disneyland, but also getting to visit …

Hey Parents, Some Kids’ TV Shows are On Sale in iTunes for the Next Two Weeks!

In Apple, Family, General, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mobile, Parenting by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

With the weather (hopefully) changing for the better (at least out where I live), being good parents, we are pretty much required to get our kids OUT of the house and playing outside. That means, un-plugging from the computer/game console/TV/electronic gadget. But who am I to talk, I’m always plugged in pretty much everywhere I go. So, don’t be like me and stay connected, and DO get your kids outside in the fresh air and using their pent up energy. And when, after the frantic play is over, be ready to serve them lots of snacks and drinks. And then…be …

If you haven’t heard of the Angry Birds mobile game by Rovio, then you probably don’t have kids, don’t have a cell phone, or simply don’t really care about gaming in general. But if you have, then you know how addictive it is to play and how successful it has been as a multi-platform game. It is currently the #1 paid mobile gaming app pretty much across the world. Recently, even NPR ran a story about the latest iteration in the Angry Birds franchise, Angry Birds Rio. And, I’m giving away 2 – $15 iTunes App Gift Store Cards to …

The MicroVision SHOWWX+ Laser Pico Projector is Small, Easy to Use & I’m Giving One Away!

In Apple, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Giveaway, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Opinion, Review, Video by Michael Sheehan2 Comments

I have only reviewed a couple of pico projectors but that is enough to convince me how great having such a small, portable form factor is. Pico projectors are a very similar to those projectors you find in conference rooms or schools, but much, much smaller and with less light output. But what you may be lacking in light projection, you get back in portability, convenience and the fact that pico projectors are truly “personal projectors”. The two that I tested in the past, the Aaxa P2 and the Cinemin Swivel, were standard pico projectors that worked pretty well. But …

MacWorld 2011 – Sort of a Yawner with a Few Moments of Wakefulness

In Apple, Case, Consumer Electronics, Event, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mobile, Opinion, Review, Software, Tablet, Tech News, Video by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

I have been going to the MacWorld Expo for many years now and I’m really sad to see it losing much of its excitement. When Apple was there, showcasing new products and innovations, there was a vibrancy and energy. Ever since Apple pulled out of the Expo, I feel that it has been going downhill. Apple provided the weight to drive the show, and there were many large vendors who helped as well. With Apple nowhere to be seen, having moved most of their large announcements to their Developer Conference and press events, MacWorld 2011 to me seemed to be …

HighTechDad’s 2010 Gadget Roundup & Gift Guide

In Apple, Auto, Consumer Electronics, Family, General, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mobile, Opinion, Review, Software, Sony by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

Better late than never I guess! Over the past year, I have tested out and reviewed a variety of gadgets and consumer electronic devices. Most of these were hand-picked for review purposes in that they are devices that, to me, looked really interesting and intriguing. Given that there are only a few days left for shopping, I realize that this post is a bit “last minute” (but so is my holiday shopping)! I have gone through all of my reviews from 2010 and picked out some of the items that I think should be included in my 2010 Gadget Roundup …

Zap Those Nasty Germs from your Cell Phone with the Violight UV Cell Phone Sanitizer

In Cellular, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPhone, iPod, Mobile, Review by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

If you are a germaphobe, you probably wipe down your cell phone many times a day with some sort of sanitizing wipe. If you aren’t doing that, your cell phone or MP3 player is probably covered with lots of wonderful, potentially infectious germs. Having 3 kids in school, germs are pervasive on all types of surfaces around our house. When any of our children are sick, my wife diligently wipes down door handles and other publicly touched surfaces. (If you aren’t disinfecting your home, you might want to take a look at this post that I did when the Swine …

Apple TV – Uniting Ideas, Technology, Media and Gadgets

In Apple, Consumer Electronics, Gadgets, General, Hardware, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Review, Video by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

I think that I understand Steve Jobs’ vision of a unified multimedia experience. Apple has been steadily forging ahead creating devices and operating systems that interconnect and work to create a rich, interactive environments. The Apple TV 2 is no different, making the big screen TV the convergence of many connected devices like computers running iTunes, the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad. But obviously it goes beyond just networking devices together, it also provides a consolidations and focal point of media from various devices and sources. With the Apple TV as a centralized hub, you can stream media …

Parallels 6 is Some Serious Tech Mojo for Mac Virtualization – Run Windows on your iPad or iPhone

In Apple, General, Hardware, Intel, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Linux, Microsoft, Mobile, Review, Software by Michael Sheehan1 Comment

I was lucky enough to get early access to the new release of Parallels (version 6). To put it bluntly, I was and still am impressed. Let’s face it, virtualization has been around for quite a few years. Currently on the Mac platform, VMware and Parallels have been playing a leapfrog game, one upping each other on features, performance and enhancements. While I’m not going to write a feature by feature comparison of the two virtualization products, I do feel the need to say something about the latest version of Parallels (version 6). I have been using both VMware and …
