In a blog post this morning, Google announced the release of a public DNS resolver called Google Public DNS, one of the things that the company is doing as part of its ongoing effort to make the web faster.” (source: ZDNet) HTD: Google seems to be getting their hands in just about everything. Looks like we all survived Cyber-Monday. Here’s what got my attention this morning: Microsoft looking into Windows ‘black screen of death’ problem “Microsoft says it’s looking into reports that its latest security updates are causing some Windows machines to stop working and display a mostly black screen with no desktop icons, taskbar, sidebar or other elements — seizing up and displaying just a “My Computer” Explorer window, if they’re lucky.” (source: TechFlash) HTD : While patches are always important to install, sometimes they just “go wrong”. It’s impossible to test all of the combinations and permutations of computers hardware/software out …

Happy Cyber-Monday all! Be sure to get your shopping done ahead of time. There are definitely deals to be found out there! Here are a few Tech News tidbits that I came across: The New TweetDeck Goes List Crazy And Adds Maps To GeoTweets “Streamreaders just keep getting better and better. A new version of TweetDeck is rolling out today with some major improvements, including support for Lists, Retweets, maps for geo-tagged messages, and LinkedIn streams. TweetDeck has already been downloaded more than 10 million times, and its active user base is in the low millions so this is a …

To those readers in the US, Happy Thanksgiving. To everyone else, happy Thursday! Not too much happening out there today (in the US at least). Four Years Not Enough for “Godfather of Spam” – “Spam costs every American–every one of us–over $13-a-year each, $42 billion in all, and that’s just what business pays. And that doesn’t include the criminals’ take. Is four years and a $250,000 fine really the best punishment for the self-proclaimed “Godfather of Spam?” Put another way: Do we take the criminal aspects of spam seriously enough?” (source: PCWorld) HTD: Wait, that’s it? Maybe part of the …

I thought that news tended to slow down as we approached the holiday season. Obviously I was wrong. Here are some articles that grabbed my attention this morning (my quick commentary follows the “HTD” tag): Joost Is Now Officially Dead – Assets Acquired By Adconion Media Group – “Adconion Media Group announced this morning that it has acquired certain key assets from Joost, the ill-fated online video service started by the infamous Kazaa and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis.” (source: TechCrunch) HTD: It’s pretty obvious that online video content delivery wars will continue to go crazy during the …

I’m going to try something new here. When you are writing about Gadgets or Consumer Electronics, things happen quickly within the space. While I try to post 1-2 gadget reviews a week, that takes time and often I miss out on quickly discussing things that catch my eye. So, I’m going to embark on a bit of an experiment here. As I work through the morning, I’m going to watch for different articles or announcements that I feel are important enough to warrant a quick mention and commentary from me. While I can’t guarantee that I will be able to …

I have been thinking about the recent release of iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 to the iPhone development community and the fact that there is now the framework and APIs for “augmented reality” applications available for programmers. What are “augmented reality” apps? Basically, applications that use the iPhone’s camera as well as GPS, compass and accelerometer to produce visual interactivity based on what the camera “sees.” What that means is you could point your iPhone at a city street, for example, and within your iPhone’s display, you would see store information or business that are in a building that the …
