As with any technology investment, you want to protect that investment. When it comes to the quite expensive Apple iPhone, this is no exception. You must get a protective case. It is most likely a better investment than protection insurance, I feel. A case is not only protective, it can be quite personal. But sometimes, you just want to show the product within the case, and that’s why I liked the innerexile glacier, which not only is a clear, protective case, the company claims that the plastic is “self healing.”

The plastic used in the innerexile glacier case is resistant to light scratching. I have been using the case for a couple of weeks now and just leave it in my pocket with coins and keys. As of this writing, I cannot see any scratches on the case itself. According to innerexile, the case “heals” itself and can withstand scratches from a 1000g bronze brush.

The company has posted a video comparing their case against another, un-named brand, with a scratch and healing test under controlled conditions:

While I would have liked to have conducted a similar test, I actually kind of liked the case and truly didn’t want to damage it.

Here are some quick specs on the case:

  • Colors: Transparent & Black
  • Fits: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • Size (height, width, thickness): iPhone 6 – 138.38mm x 71.47mm x 8.18mm; iPhone 6 Plus – 159.32mm x 80.89mm x 8.44mm
  • Weight: ~13 grams

There are obviously thousands of different iPhone cases available in the market. So you need to look with a critical eye when evaluating protective cases. One of the most critical things to me is if the edge of the case is slightly above the iPhone itself. This protects the glass from getting scratched if it slides across the ground. The innerexile glacier is pretty close to being exactly even with the iPhone. This means that it may become scratched. The middle part of the case is actually raised enough, however, to potentially protect it. The top and bottom inch or so is ever so slightly lower than the iPhone though.

One thing that I thought was a nice design touch was the fact that each innerexile glacier case comes with 3 colored buttons designed to match your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. The colors are matte gold, matte silver and matte black. The buttons for both the power and volume are easily interchanged and really complement the design of the iPhone.

After a couple of weeks using the innerexile glacier case, I had some other observations that I would like to summarize, namely:

  • Overall, the innerexile glacier case feels nice. It’s not too slippery although initially, it was a bit more slippery.
  • I like the clear color – it allows it to showcase design of the iPhone.
  • I wish the bezel around the entire case was a bit higher (perhaps a millimeter or two higher to prevent the screen from potentially being scratched should is slide across a surface face down).
  • As mentioned, I like that the power and volume buttons can be changed to match the color of the phone. That is a nice touch.
  • I have, however, noticed that particles or small pieces of debris can get under the top bezel (on the top of the iPhone) and potentially down in the top back by the camera area. This happens in the top couple of centimeters of the back. This means that one has to periodically clean the phone and the case, which also means that I need to take off the case. This could potentially cause some scratching of the phone where there may be small debris. I don’t notice this on other potions of the case.

Overall, the innerexile glacier case seems to perform up to expectations. As of this writing, the case itself is scratch-free, and, luckily, I have not dropped my iPhone 6 Plus to test how well it absorbs impact (well, I have but it was a short drop to a wood floor). The communication I have received from the company says that the retail price is between $35-40 depending on the case size (either for iPhone 6 or 6 Plus). As this is a very new case to the market, there are not many Amazon buying options available and those seem to be coming in around $65. You may want to check back on Amazon to see if the prices do drop.

But do yourself a favor and protect that investment you have made on your iPhone. Get a protective case!
