Anti-Spyware Tools (recommended)

In General, Security, Software by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

There are two anti-spyware tools that are free that I recommend all Windows users install:

Both of these tools are free, however, you need to be diligent in terms of updating their “definitions” regularly (part of the price of using “freeware” tools).

I usually go to one of my favorite Windows program sites called MajorGeeks to get the latest versions of Shareware/Commercial/Freeware programs. I have linked the two programs above to their associated listings on MajorGeeks (if the links do not work, just go to MajorGeeks and search for those programs).

Bringing life to an old laptop

In General, Hardware by Michael Sheehan6 Comments

More fun in techdom. My wife’s laptop hard drive was filling up…becoming more fragmented…and therefore, slowing down. I decided to give it the gift of a new life. I purchased a 100gig hard drive with a 16mb cache. Installing on a dell is a snap…sorta. For the Mac: a matter of minutes with zero configuration needed. iPhoto did it all perfectly

Sidekickin’

In Cellular, Gadgets, General, Hardware by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

So, my cellphone, the Sidekick has a new life! This is first, a great gadget! Cell phone, web browsing, instant messenger, camera, PIM…even has games. Well, there has been a lot of anticipation of an upgrade to the OS which brings some nice new enhancements. The biggest one is the ability to run javascript…

There has been some discusson on the hiptop forum about who has received the update and when…and the moderators of the forum kept saying that it was completely random. Well someone figured out how to “force” the update to happen. It was a bit of a pain but it actually worked for me (continual shutdown and restart of the device). I now have it!

Nice to breathe life into an old gadget!

…a new respect…

In General, Open Source by Michael SheehanLeave a Comment

I’ve been playing around with MediaWiki…it is quite a bit of work! However, for someone new to it, it is a but overwhelming. Trying to find documentation on how to modify skins and such proved a bit daunting…

Trying to get my teeth into it.

WP (WordPress) seems to be a pretty nice piece of work. I find that any Open Source web-ap that is extendible through plug-ins or extensions is great. Things like Mambo, phpcollab, WP are my personal favorites right now. (Although, phpCollab is a bit stale and a bit harder to extend…)
