A few months ago, Sony and Ford Motors invited the Cast of Dads out to the East Coast to participate in a variety of events, one of them was driving a 2011 Ford Explorer (note, link is for the 2012 model) from Boston to NYC. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the event, and boy was I jealous. Part of my envy came from the fact that I couldn’t drive the Ford Explorer (you can read more about the excursion over at the Cast of Dads). Luckily, over the 2011 holidays, I did have the pleasure of getting behind the wheel of the 2011 Ford Explorer for a road trip to and from Los Angeles from the San Francisco Bay Area.

I’m pretty familiar with Ford and their push to enable technology behind the wheel. I have test driven the Ford Flex and the Lincoln MKX (which is essentially quite similar to the Ford Edge). But being able to experience the Explorer first hand was pretty important to me since it has been a long running model for Ford since 1990.

Well, we are already in 2012 now, so how does the 2011 Ford Explorer stack up? Pretty darn well. It has plenty of technology to make a gadget-drooling dad happy as I barreled down the super boring stretch of the I-5. (If you haven’t driving the I-5 ever, you definitely aren’t in for any type of treat. It’s really boring and at times your auto is filled with the lovely stench of cow manure as you pass the cattle farms – you can also almost take a nap without turning the wheel as the I-5 seems to stretch on indefinitely.)

We almost dropped the deuce laughing during some of DaddyBrad’s stories in this episode of Cast of Dads called “Deuce in the Dryer“. It seems like we hit a low about mid podcast, revived ourselves a bit and then ended up back with our minds in the toilet, sort off, at the end of the podcast. But we covered a lot more in this 47th episode. Some interesting types of foods were discussed (with Jeff’s son coming up with a yummy sounding creation for Thanksgiving), but I’m not sure how I feel about a “Krispy Kreme burger”…just the sound of it made my arteries harden.

I feel like the groove is back…we took a few weeks off during the summer but given the range of topics below, I would say that we are doing a pretty good job hitting some of those “crappy” topics that make a dad’s life fun and interesting.

We are halfway through November, I mean “Movember,” and I’ve got this itchy feeling on my face, as do a few of the other dads on Cast of Dads. Why? Because we are donating our liplines and faces to the Movember effort. You can see my post about it here. While I definitely am not quite sporting the crazy mustaches that Brad or Max are doing (and I don’t have the social influence that CC has), I certainly don’t look like my normal self. My dad actually likes it, despite in the past wanting to pay me to shave off any facial hair that I grew. So, in the #46th episode of Cast of Dads, “Real Men Will Grow a Mo” we talk a bit about Movember as well as a lot of other hot topics like Thanksgiving, Penn State, the Occupy Movement, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Incognito mode and much more.

If you feel so inspired, please be sure to donate to one of the Cast of Dad’s Movember effort like:

We had quite a few topics stewing to be discussed on Cast of Dads Episode #45 “Dads CAN Cook Even When Sauced“. For starters, we had a conversation about a social media campaign that tried to use modern day social media tactics but using a very old and outdated stereotype, that of Dads not being able to cook and having to rely on bottled alternatives. The funny thing is, we actually DO use bottled alternatives when cooking, just that they tend to be alcohol-based and we drink them while we cook from scratch!

I made it a point to be actually cooking from scratch (see the picture below) when recording this podcast. I think what irritated us most was the fact that one of the reasons why the 5 of us dads get together regularly to record our show is to refute many of the stereotypes typically associated with dads and parenting. Dads are involve more than ever with the upbringing of our children and we get together to discuss these changes and how to become better parents in the process. Another thing that we are extremely tired of is getting “mommy-centric” PR pitches which we regularly receive. But that is a topic for another, on-going discussion.

We got into a lot of other saucy topics in the podcast, with our usual creative banter. But you will just have to listen to the show to hear those! [click to continue…]
