Google is rolling out Gemini in Classroom to K-12 students starting today, and if your kids use Google Classroom at school, their AI study assistant has just appeared right inside the app. Google has always been well-embedded within education, with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides leading the way. I am a big believer that using Google Docs and similar tools is essential for students to prepare for future study and work.
AI is a tricky one still. For starters, educators need to understand not only how to effectively use AI (or not) to further their backend education abilities. But they also need to know how to work with their students on how to use AI safely and well. It’s a double-edged sword. You don’t want your students to depend too heavily on AI to get their work done, but on the flip side, you want them to be prepared to use AI “anywhere and everywhere.” They will be doing it anyway.
Now Google is making it even easier by injecting it into Google Classroom. Personally, I’m encouraged by this, provided the educator is well-trained in guiding young minds on the good, bad, and ugly of using AI.
