Pre-orders for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max open Saturday, September 12 at 5 AM Pacific, with delivery and in-store availability starting September 18. MacRumors published a complete breakdown of the 10 confirmed new features, led by a variable aperture main camera with four settings from f/1.48 to f/4.0, giving users manual depth-of-field control for the first time on any iPhone. Both Pro models ship with the A20 Pro chip on a 2-nanometer process. Apple confirmed variable aperture on both the Pro and Pro Max, not just the higher-end model as earlier reports suggested.

AirPods 5 Bring Standard ANC to the Base Model for the First Time at $129

Apple announced AirPods 5 at Tuesday’s event with Active Noise Cancellation included in the base model at $129, eliminating the $50 upcharge that had separated the two AirPods 4 tiers. Both models ship September 18. Apple says AirPods 5 reduce background noise by 50% more than the previous generation, courtesy of a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and updated Adaptive EQ. The higher-tier model with a Wireless Charging Case runs $149. Live Translation is also included when paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone running iOS 27.

Apple Reveals That Siri AI Features Have Daily Usage Limits, With a Paid Tier Coming

Buried in the fine print at yesterday’s event, Apple confirmed that Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and Apple Foundation Cloud models in Shortcuts will all carry daily usage limits when iOS 27 ships on September 14. Hit your daily cap and the features go dark until the window resets. Expanded access beyond the free tier will eventually be available for a fee, tied to higher iCloud+ subscription levels. Apple did not specify the limits, when the caps take effect, or what expanded access will cost.

Apple Announces the iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable Phone

Apple officially unveiled the iPhone Duo at yesterday’s “Surprise and Shine” event, the company’s first foldable smartphone. When closed, it shows a 5.5-inch OLED display. When open, the two halves connect into a single continuous 7.8-inch inner display, with the same aspect ratio across both halves. Apple claims the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever made when fully open. Notably, it carries an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, something Samsung has not achieved on any Galaxy Z Fold model to date. Pre-orders open October 16, with a launch date of October 23. Pricing was not confirmed in the announcement but is expected to start around $2,000.

Apple Presents Forensic MacBook Evidence in Escalating Trade Secret Fight With OpenAI

Apple submitted forensic analysis from a former engineer’s MacBook in its ongoing trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI, and the findings are detailed. According to Apple’s court filing, ex-employee Chang Liu downloaded a confidential Apple circuit schematic, used it actively in his work at OpenAI, became aware of Apple’s internal investigation into his actions, and sent instructions to an OpenAI colleague to destroy evidence, receiving written confirmation she would comply. Apple also says Liu used an internal tool at OpenAI that shares its name with an Apple engineering application. OpenAI responded the following day, framing the situation as a failure of Apple’s own internal security practices: the company argues that Apple encouraged employees to use personal iCloud accounts for company documents, gave departing employees insufficient time to return materials, and that former Apple staff were routinely contacted by their old teams after leaving.

Anker Drops Its Sub-Brands and Unveils a Local AI Home Hub With Built-In NAS

Anker made two major announcements at IFA 2026 today. First, the company is consolidating all five of its sub-brands, including Eufy, EufyMake, Soundcore, and Solix, under a single Anker name starting immediately, and it is opening its first-ever physical retail store in Berlin on September 5. Second, Anker unveiled MindBase, a local AI home hub that connects up to 100 Anker devices alongside any Matter-compatible product from other brands, working in parallel with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. MindBase runs all AI processing on a dedicated on-device chip, doubles as a NAS with up to 48TB of expandable local storage, and lets users search security camera footage using natural language without sending anything to the cloud. Samsung Opens AI Living Showcase at IFA 2026, Unveils Bespoke AI Washer That Cuts Energy Use 70 Percent

Samsung opened its IFA 2026 experience space today at Humboldt Carré in central Berlin, having departed from the main Messe Berlin venue to run its own invite-only showcase through September 6. The centerpiece appliance reveal is a new Bespoke AI Washer with an A-70 percent energy rating under EU standards, up from the A-65 percent model Samsung showed at IFA 2025. The lineup adds a 13 kg large-capacity model alongside a 10 kg version, with both fitting a standard 600 mm cabinet depth. AI manages motor efficiency, thermal control, and cycle selection. Samsung is also demonstrating the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, and Galaxy Watch 9 in an AI Living experience that shows how its devices coordinate as a connected system. These models are development-stage displays, and commercial availability by market has not been confirmed.

Anthropic Ships Claude Fable 5.1 with Better Benchmarks, Lower Costs, and Built-In Text Watermarking

Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 yesterday, calling them “the world’s most advanced models for coding and knowledge work.” Fable 5.1 beats both its predecessor and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol across major benchmarks, including a score of 52.6 percent on Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, more than double what Fable 5 achieved on the same test. It costs about 25 percent less than Fable 5 for typical workloads and up to 45 percent less for highly agentic tasks, due to reduced cache-read pricing. The update also bakes invisible watermarking into all Fable 5.1 text, with a detection API rolling out to eligible organizations in private preview. Claude Code users should see roughly 60 percent fewer cybersecurity false positives.

Anthropic Launches a Standard for AI Agents to Control Physical Hardware

Anthropic published a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a specification that lets AI agents discover, operate, and troubleshoot physical equipment. The initial targets are scientific research labs and advanced manufacturing, including microscopes, robotic arms, liquid handlers, and laser calibration rigs. MHS works with any device that has a programmable interface and is model-agnostic, meaning any AI agent using standard protocols (including MCP, Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol) can tap into it. Anthropic is working with early partners in science, robotics, electronics, and manufacturing to develop safety evaluations before making the standard open-source. The standard enables AI agents to run experiments around the clock, reason through steps in real time, and recover from hardware errors without human intervention.
