Summary
AppAudit is a macOS application that brings clarity to your Mac app inventory by scanning installed apps, detecting duplicates, and surfacing critical details like version, size, architecture, and hidden helpers. Available in Free and Pro editions, it helps you review, organize, and plan app cleanup or migration projects without automatic deletion.
What it does
AppAudit addresses the challenge of managing cluttered Mac application inventories by offering a clear, structured view beyond what the traditional Finder offers. By scanning .app bundles across system and third-party locations (including active running apps when exposed by macOS), AppAudit provides scan summaries, total app counts, and visual app identification using real icons. Its duplicate detection features highlight multiple copies of the same app and allow users to group and inspect them without cluttering the main interface.
The application focuses on giving users full visibility and control over their software environment. Each application’s detailed view reveals essential metadata, including app path, bundle details, file size, key dates, architecture (Apple Silicon, Universal, or Intel-only), and review notices. Users can organize their applications with custom lists, searchable notes, and multi-select filters by name, developer, app type, or reinstall source. Built-in guided tours and explicit macOS permission explanations ensure both technical and non-technical users feel confident during cleanup or system migration planning.
While the Free edition covers essential inventory, duplicate detection, search, and list management, AppAudit Pro unlocks advanced workbench capabilities. Pro features include copy-by-copy inspection, advanced filtering, review tracking, guarded cleanup actions for eligible apps, and export options to CSV, Markdown audit reports, and JSON snapshots. Throughout the experience, AppAudit serves as an informational and organizational tool rather than an automated cleaner, ensuring users make informed decisions before taking action.
Why I built it
I got a new Mac a few years ago, skipped Apple’s migration tools, and found I’d piled up years of duplicate installs, one-off tools, and apps I no longer needed. Apple’s System Report lists them, but I couldn’t copy, export, or organize that list usefully, and I couldn’t find a tool that could. So in June 2026 I built one. I build WordPress plugins, Mac apps, and custom tools, usually because I needed one and couldn't find it. If you have a workflow that needs fixing, a plugin you wish existed, or an app idea you want built, tell me what you're trying to do, and I'll tell you what it would take.
