Apple’s First Touchscreen Mac Is an OLED MacBook Pro Starting at $2,899

Summary

Apple announced a new MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED display called PROLED XDR, the first Mac with touch input. It also has a light-up Apple logo and runs on the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, with pre-orders open now and deliveries starting November 6.

Why it matters

Touch on the Mac changes how people interact with the laptop, especially for drawing, music, and quick gestures like pinch-to-zoom. The price sits well above the standard MacBook Pro, so it is a decision for people who will use the display every day.

HTD Says

Apple spent years saying Mac screens didn’t need touch, and now it is charging a premium for exactly that, so the real question is whether you will actually reach for it. Steve Jobs was pretty adamant about it. But as the iPhone and iPad gained traction, consumers got used to interacting with their screens. I can’t tell you how many times I have actually tapped or tried to scroll my MacBook Pro’s screen. Now, this is a reality.

It’s not really my cup of tea, personally. Nothing bothers me more than a smudged laptop screen. But I’m sure plenty of Apple consumers will like this feature. I honestly thought the Touch Bar was kind of cool. Now the entire screen will have it.

Just one question for Apple’s marketing, creative, and design teams. Why does the product shot make the laptop screen look like it’s been catastrophically dropped? When I see those vertical lines, I immediately get tech PTSD and worry that I now have to fire up my AppleCare and get the entire screen replaced.
