Gemini Can Now Build and Edit Documents, Slide Decks, and Spreadsheets Right Inside Chat

Summary

The Gemini app can now generate, preview, and edit text documents, slide decks, and spreadsheets inline in a chat, with export to PPTX or PDF and one-tap opening in Google Slides or Sheets. PDF preview and editing work on the web and in the mobile apps, while Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, and code files are web-only for now. Google also pushed its new blurred overlay design to all Android devices, after debuting it on the Pixel 11.

Why it matters

Everyday users can now go from a prompt to a finished deck or spreadsheet without leaving the chat, which lowers the bar for school, work, and family projects.

HTD Says

Gemini turned the chat box into a tiny office suite, and for most people, that is all the Word and PowerPoint they will ever need. This is quite compelling for people who use Gemini for basic functions, and it improves productivity across the board. And while I love this added functionality, it should be used with care and thought.

For starters, when prompting, we should always remember “garbage in = garbage out.” Think through your prompt before sending something short, bland, and unthought-out. On the other hand, remember to carefully review any AI output (I’m not just talking about Gemini here).

If you don’t use critical thinking with any AI model or output, others will notice. Yes, AI is a tool (like a computer, email, or a hammer), as it gets you down the road to accomplish something. But don’t use a screwdriver to hammer in a nail. Review your AI at the beginning and end of the process.
