iPad Mini 8 Is Coming Into Focus (OLED Display, A19 Pro Chip, and an October Window)

Summary

The next iPad mini is shaping up as Apple’s most significant mini upgrade in years. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has confirmed an October 2026 target, and code discovered inside Apple’s internal developer materials points to an A19 Pro chip and an OLED display, both firsts for the iPad mini line. The current iPad mini 7 uses an LCD panel and the A17 Pro chip, making both upgrades substantial. Pricing details are unconfirmed, but the shift to OLED would likely push the starting price above the current $499.

Why it matters

The iPad mini has a loyal audience who want a compact tablet that fits in a jacket pocket, and this generation looks like the one to actually upgrade for. Apple has never shipped OLED on the mini form factor. Paired with a Pro chip, it could be the most capable small-screen tablet available anywhere.

HTD Says

If you have been waiting for an iPad mini worth upgrading to (with OLED and an A19 Pro chip), it’s supposedly arriving this October, and it’s the answer you might have been waiting for. I was (and still am) a huge fan of the iPad Mini. I have one that is many, many years old (and has been downgraded to just my music streamer for parties). The iPad Air is still my iPad of choice for a good, all-around, super-capable iPad.

The iPad Mini’s form factor is the winner in my book. And with upcoming upgrades to the display and chip, this new Mini could be a killer upgrade. While it is not confirmed yet (let’s wait until Apple’s September announcements), I’m pretty sure this will happen.

I do believe it will be more expensive due to upgrades to the chip and screen, as well as the recent increase in component prices. It will be important to make a careful comparison between iPad models to see whether the size and capabilities warrant paying a little more for an Air than for the Mini. The Pro is still a bit too niche and luxury in my opinion. And there is always the regular iPad to consider. Get out your comparison spreadsheets!
