Apple Music Will Show Listeners Which Songs Were Made With AI

Summary

Apple Music told distributors that AI transparency labels will become visible to listeners later this year. The “Made With AI” tags have been required on new submissions since March 2026, covering tracks, compositions, artwork, and music videos in which AI played a substantial role in their creation. Until now, those tags existed only in the metadata, invisible to anyone streaming the music. Once the update rolls out, songs flagged as AI-generated will display visible labels directly in the Apple Music app, allowing subscribers to see what they’re actually listening to.

Why it matters

AI-generated music is flooding streaming platforms at a scale that makes it increasingly hard for listeners to tell apart from recordings made by human artists. Apple is the first major streaming platform to surface this information directly to the listener. Whether you care about supporting human artists or simply want to know what you’re playing, these labels put that context in your hands for the first time.

HTD Says

Apple Music is about to start labeling AI-generated songs so listeners can see what they’re actually streaming, and it is long overdue for a service that has been quietly flooded with synthetic music for the past two years. This is a smart move given the current pushback on AI. I find it harder and harder to discern AI-generated music from traditional music. It’s gotten quite good.

Unlike identifying AI writing, AI music is much harder to identify unless you truly have a trained ear. And some of the “songs” are interesting, and the “artists” are equally so. This type of transparency will be important for trust, which has been eroding over time with AI.

On the flip side, perhaps they should simply invent a new category for the Grammys for AI Music. While it could legitimize the category, some AI artists are pretty good. If you compartmentalize the human versus AI and make it clear to everyone, perhaps it may be good overall, and human listeners could be the judge of what they want to listen to, provided it is transparent.
