Gemini in Chrome for Android Opens to All US Users, Brings “Auto Browse” Task Automation to Phones

Summary

Google finished rolling out Gemini in Chrome to all US Android users on August 18, ending a phased preview that began earlier this year. The assistant sits in Chrome’s toolbar and can summarize articles, answer questions about a page without switching tabs, and connect to Google apps like Calendar and Keep. A separate feature called Auto Browse is available on phones for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. Auto Browse can complete tasks on your behalf inside the browser, including booking parking for an event, updating a recurring online order, or arranging travel details.

Why it matters

Gemini in Chrome is now a default part of the browser for every US Android user, not an opt-in experiment. Auto Browse is the more significant capability here. A browser that can complete real tasks in the background is a meaningful shift in how AI assistants are being built into everyday tools.

HTD Says

Google just switched Gemini on for everyone in Chrome on Android, and the part worth paying attention to is Auto Browse, which can actually do things in the browser for you rather than just summarizing what you are reading. While I’m not an Android user, it will only be a matter of time before something similar to this rolls out to iOS.

As I previously reported, Google Gemini’s reach continues to expand. With Gemini embedded in Chrome on Android as an assistant, usage will continue to rise. Agentic AI is the big buzzword in business. Now, agents will expand into consumer activities. This will be a good taste… er… test of how consumer adoption and trust in agentic AI will go.

I’m just waiting for someone to write a short comparative article on this rollout and Siri Intelligence. Honestly, I feel like Google and Android users will have a leg up here because of Google’s breadth and depth when it comes to “the internet” and knowing what to look for.
