OtterBox Is Already Selling iPhone 18 Pro Cases at Best Buy, and the Packaging Says They Fit the iPhone 17 Pro Too

Summary

OtterBox has begun stocking cases at Best Buy marked for both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro, based on packaging photographed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The carton reads “for iPhone 18 Pro / iPhone 17 Pro” in English and French, indicating OtterBox expects the two phones to share the same physical footprint. At least two independent leakers have suggested the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be thicker and heavier than its predecessor due to a larger battery, so Pro Max buyers should treat the compatibility claim as unconfirmed for now. Cases showing up on shelves this early is a consistent sign that Apple’s September announcement is about three to four weeks out.

Why it matters

If the dimensions match, iPhone 17 Pro owners may be able to skip buying new cases entirely when they upgrade. The smarter move is still to wait for Apple’s official unveiling before purchasing anything, but this is useful context for budgeting for an upgrade this fall.

HTD Says

Otterbox put iPhone 18 Pro cases on Best Buy shelves and printed “fits iPhone 17 Pro” on the box, which is either great news for upgraders or an early supply chain misstep, and we will know which one in about a month. While I do think that OtterBox is a fine case manufacturer and do recommend them, I don’t think that this news means that iPhone 17 Pro cases will fit the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro. We need confirmation on this.

There are so many things to think about here. If the dimensions are the same, then case manufacturers will not have to spin up new designs or change case molds, which could keep manufacturing costs slightly lower. It also means that consumers can potentially reuse older cases if they are simply doing a 1-step upgrade. If the dimensions of the iPhone Pro differ from those of the iPhone Pro Max, this mixed-use case (pun intended) may (or may not) introduce wrinkles into this process.

In the past, the frustrating thing for me (and probably other consumers) was that with every launch of a new iPhone, I had to get a new case. If there is an option where I don’t have to do that upgrade, that is a potential cost savings. However, I also believe that case manufacturers get a nice little iPhone halo effect when new iPhones are released; they can push new products and announcements as a result
