It’s been a while since I hosted a giveaway, so I thought that I would start out the Memorial Day Holidays with a giveaway holiday! If you don’t have a smartphone yet, this giveaway is for you! Or, if your child is ready for their first smartphone, you better enter. Or if you simply want a back up phone, you may want to enter as well. Regardless, courtesy of AT&T, I’m doing an HTC First Giveaway!

HTC First

As I actually haven’t had any hands-on with the HTC First (because I’m giving it away), I’m just going to speak to HTC in general. Post image for Wake Up! Mother’s Day is Almost Here!

In case you didn’t know it already, Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Heads up to daughters and sons everywhere, it’s time to think about the person who hopefully nurtured you through the developing stages of your life and has provided you with ongoing support and unwavering love. However, I think it is important to not just think about moms, but also those female figures in your life who have given you guidance, a helpful hand, companionship and protection. These could be moms or mother-in-laws or mother figures or step mothers or foster mothers or simply mentors who are women.

Happy Mother’s Day 2013 – From HighTechDad

Mother’s Day may be a commercial day, great for cards and flowers, but it is important to take a little bit of time to honor these women, all gifts aside. The mother or mother figure pretty much across the human (and animal kingdom) is the protector. In my family, my wife is the “mama bear” – the one that will throw herself in the way of any type of physical or psychological danger to protect her offspring. The mother takes on various forms in our society, and I must admit, I don’t know each and every mom personality-type out there. Heck, there are probably dads or other caregivers who assume the “mom” role. Regardless, this is their day, and you should thank them for their efforts, love and encouragement.

I do have to mention the dads out there (but obviously we have a day as well). Without dads, there would be no moms. But those moms are really great reality checks for us dads. They keep us in line. Heck, my wife calls me her fourth kid…perhaps because I act like one so often? Who knows. What I’m trying to say here is that it is important for dads to recognize their family counterparts as well on Mother’s Day. (Hey dads, did you buy your wife a card yet?)

I’m not sure if Father’s Day gets the same type of treatment. But that is fine in my book. On Mother’s Day, mom gets to be queen for a day, instead of indentured servant, slave, project manager, cook, chauffeur, cleaner, organizer, tutor, doctor, psychiatrist, fashion consultant, mentor, entertainer, social coordinator…need I go on? Of course there are professional moms who add “day time bread winner” to the mix as well. Back in 2007, I figured out that if my wife, a “stay at home mom,” were to earn a salary based on the “jobs” that she does running the household, she would pull in over $240,000!

Post image for What Has Happened to Continuity?

Was it something I said or did? Why aren’t you talking to me any more? Did I not do everything you asked? No, I’m not talking about dating here, although, in some way I sort of am. I am talking about being “dumped” by a brand. This is particularly painful if you are a blogger or content creator. Breakups are really hard, especially if you worked diligently to maintain the relationship. When it comes to commitment, you need to think about another word as well – continuity.

I have been very lucky. I have worked with a lot of amazing global brands like Sony, Ford, Intel, AT&T, Trend Micro, IBM (see some of the programs by clicking through the links) and plenty of smaller brands and firms. Some of these were longer-term projects and some were much shorter. Some were with other groups of bloggers or content creators like the Cast of Dads and other groups put together by brands or PR firms.

There is also another set of brands and vendors that I have worked with that are slightly different. These are sort of like the “summer time romances” where they are active for a while and then go away until the next project comes out. They provide me with new products to review from time to time or new experiences to participate in. Some of these brands are LG, Belkin, Microsoft, Logitech, D-Link, Jabra, Honeywell, Hyundai, Klutz, Nintendo, Norelco, and even Apple, among many others.

Continuity

There is still one thing really irks me though. It’s when these brands go quiet…for a long time. They may come back, but often it is after an extended silence where much of the momentum and excitement that was originally present is lost due to a long period of “inactivity.” Don’t get me wrong though, I place an extremely high value on each and every program that I have participated in (or am currently involved in), regardless of whether they are long or short term.

Talking on the phone has become easier and easier. With unlimited calling now from both land lines as well as cell phones, many people simply don’t worry about talking on a phone for a long period of time. Some people are even completely switching out their home phone with a cell phone. Personally, I’m not quite there yet. Yes, we have a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) line in our home that has unlimited nationwide calling. We also have cell phones for almost all of the members of our family with roll-over minutes which we never use. But recently I was introduced to an interesting service, called Ooma, that made me rethink how telephony within my family works.

For starters, Ooma is a VoIP service. VoIP stands for Voice Over IP which essentially translates to being able to conduct telephone calls via an internet connection only. Your Internet access basically becomes your phone line and your dial-tone travels via the internet as well. There are now plenty of companies that offer VoIP service including most of the major cable and Internet providers. I have used some of these other providers before but it was several years ago when much of the technology was still being fine-tuned. Things have come a long way now – features have evolved – service has gotten better – and competition is driving down the price point.

But what makes Ooma a bit different, in my opinion, is the feature set. And this is something that I will go into in greater detail a bit later. But first I thought that I would answer some questions about why to go with a VoIP service like Ooma. Well for starters, you can typically get a lot more features for less money. In fact, the basic Ooma service is free, which means that it is great as a secondary phone line (but trust me, you will want to pay the $9.99 / month to get the extra features). But, remember that when you do a cost comparison between a traditional phone line (POTS) and a VoIP line, you need to factor in the cost of your internet connection as well in order to get a true apples to apples comparison. However, you probably would have had internet anyway so it might be just a wash. If you do do a lot of video streaming (e.g., Netflix or Hulu) and plan on using your VoIP line as your primary phone line, you might want to see if you can upgrade your Internet connection to one that is a bit faster. Also remember, if your Internet connection is down, your phone service will be down as well so it is important to think about back up plans when you move to VoIP.

For me, however, having a VoIP service like Ooma’s either as your kids’ main phone number (which they can fight over) or as your home-business line makes a lot of sense (or cents to overuse the cliché). It is cost-effective and often these services come with unlimited calling. I know plenty of families that are switching away from traditional phone lines to use either only cell phones or VoIP services. I, unfortunately, am sort of tied to DSL (at least until AT&T U-Verse is available in my area or I make a change completely to cable). But I digress.
