Google Home Gets AI Storytelling and Broader Camera Support in August Update
Google rolled out its first August update for Google Home and Gemini for Home, and the headline feature is Interactive Storytime. Families can ask Gemini to invent an original story, drop their kids into the plot, or change what happens mid-telling with a voice command. Beyond storytelling, the update improves how Gemini handles alarm and timer requests in natural language, and the Google Home app now supports live camera feeds from Eufy, Tapo, Wyze, Reolink, and Nanit, with AI-generated event summaries for Home Premium Advanced subscribers.

Google Earth Launched AI Image Generation, Then Pulled It in Under 24 Hours Over Misinformation Concerns
Google added Nano Banana 2 AI image generation to Google Earth’s web app on July 30, letting users pick any location from satellite or 3D view and generate a custom visual scene. The feature was live for less than 24 hours before Google pulled it. Users were creating and sharing convincing fake satellite images of conflict zones, altered landmarks, and fabricated disaster scenes. Google said it saw legitimate professional use cases but could not contain policy violations at scale. The feature is offline while Google works on stronger guardrails before a relaunch.

Base Power Launches a 39.2 kWh Home Battery and Raises $1 Billion to Put It in More Houses
Austin-based Base Power launched Core, a 39.2 kWh home battery with up to 36 hours of backup power, and closed a $1 billion Series D at a $13 billion post-money valuation. The company has grown from 100 MWh of total deployed capacity last fall to over 500 MWh today, now installing roughly 100 units per day. Currently available in Texas and Illinois, with expansion to more states funded by this raise.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 ($1,899, 256GB) and Z Flip 8 ($1,199, 256GB) hit store shelves on August 7. Early reviews are out now. The Z Fold 8 adopts a passport-shaped form factor with upgraded cameras, a 5,000mAh battery, and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. The Z Flip 8 is headlined by its full FlexWindow upgrade, which now supports complete app navigation from the cover screen without opening the phone. The top-tier Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,100. Samsung is offering trade-in deals of up to $600 through its website.

Bending Spoons Buys Airtable for $1.28B, a Fraction of Its 2021 Peak
Italian software company Bending Spoons has agreed to buy Airtable for $1.28 billion in cash, marking its first acquisition since going public at an $18 billion valuation in July. Airtable was worth $11 billion at its 2021 peak and was trading at roughly $4 billion on secondary markets earlier this year, making this a significant down-round exit. The company still posts roughly $480 million in annual recurring revenue, growing 20% year over year, and serves more than 500,000 organizations, including 80% of the Fortune 100. Bending Spoons’ playbook is consistent across its portfolio (which includes Evernote, WeTransfer, EventBrite, and Vimeo): acquire at a discount, cut staff aggressively, streamline the product, and push toward profitability.

OpenAI Publishes “Apple is Getting This Wrong” with Email Evidence in Lawsuit Rebuttal
OpenAI published a detailed rebuttal to Apple’s trade secrets lawsuit, calling it “careless, aggressive, and oddly personal.” The post, titled “Apple is getting this wrong,” includes email screenshots disputing Apple’s claim that they attempted to contact OpenAI before filing suit. OpenAI argues Apple’s outside lawyers emailed the wrong person after confusing two Asian last names, that the meeting Apple claimed to have had with OpenAI’s General Counsel never happened, and that Apple told OpenAI they were “resolving any issues” before going silent for five months and then suing. The post also defends former Apple engineering leaders Chang Liu and Tang Tan, who are central to the lawsuit.

Samsung and Prime Video Launch World’s First HDR10+ ADVANCED Streaming Experience
Samsung announced that Prime Video is the first streaming service to carry HDR10+ ADVANCED content globally, with Samsung’s 2026 TV lineup receiving support via a firmware update starting this month. The new standard adds two things existing HDR doesn’t do well: Enhanced Overall Brightness, which pulls more usable peak brightness out of compatible panels across the full tonal range, and Intelligent Motion Smoothing, which reads scene-by-scene metadata to preserve the cinematic look of films while smoothing fast sports and action content separately.

The headline is the iPhone Ultra, the company’s first foldable phone with a 7.76-inch inner display, no visible crease, and a price expected to start around $1,999. Apple Plans iCloud+ Upgrades for Heavy Siri AI Users
Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed during last week’s Q3 earnings call that users who push Apple Intelligence hard will eventually need to upgrade their iCloud+ subscription to avoid being throttled. Basic Siri functionality stays free, but Image Playground already has daily limits, and Cook indicated Siri AI compute costs will be passed along to heavy users through iCloud+ tiers starting at $0.99 per month. Specific limits and higher-tier pricing will likely be announced alongside iOS 27 in September.

Qualcomm Notifies Android Partners of Double-Digit Chip Price Hike Starting September 1
Qualcomm has told hardware partners it will raise Snapdragon chipset prices by a double-digit percentage starting September 1, 2026. The company attributed the move to surging costs across wafer fabrication, memory, assembly, and packaging, driven by AI data center demand crowding out supply. Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, and other Android brands rely on Qualcomm chips for their flagship phones, meaning higher handset prices are likely to follow by late 2026 and through 2027. This is the same memory shortage that recently pushed Xbox prices up by $150 and caused Roku to raise set prices by 60 percent as well.
