Apple Is Building a Brand-New Operating System for Its Smart Home Hub
Apple is developing an all-new operating system purpose-built for its upcoming smart home hub, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The platform combines elements of tvOS, watchOS, and iOS into something designed specifically for a home display context. It will feature a grid of icons, widgets, and apps with customizable clock faces, and Siri AI sits at the center of the experience. The hub will support FaceTime calls, HomeKit accessory control, home security monitoring, photo galleries, a calendar, and music playback. Built-in facial recognition identifies who is looking at the display and shows them personalized information, and the interface automatically scales up when you approach and shrinks as you move away. The device pairs a HomePod-style speaker with a 7-inch display, and Apple has filed for a “homeOS” trademark through a shell company. Apple is targeting a release window between October 2026 and early 2027.

Apple Is Negotiating Nine-Figure Deals to Feed Siri AI Real Publisher Content
Apple has approached major news publishers about multiyear deals that would give Siri AI access to current news and information, according to The Wall Street Journal. Unlike standard AI content licensing, which sets a flat fee for broad access to a publisher’s archive, Apple is proposing to pay publishers each time their content is actually used by Siri in a response. Apple has discussed a nine-figure budget for the program. Siri AI launches this fall with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. Apple’s motivation is clear: an Apple Intelligence notification summary feature in 2024 generated fabricated headlines from real news outlets, forcing Apple to pull news summaries entirely for more than a year.

Google Gemini Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users, Fastest-Growing Product in Google’s History
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, a milestone no Google product has reached this quickly. Gemini climbed from 400 million users in May 2025 to 950 million by early August 2026, then crossed 1 billion in less than a month. About 63% of users speak to Gemini rather than type, and one in five interactions involves screen sharing or a live camera feed. Gemini generates 150 million images every day. ChatGPT, for context, hit 1 billion monthly users in June. This makes Gemini the 14th Google product to cross the billion-user threshold, following Search, Maps, YouTube, and Gmail.

Google Replaced Its Classic Search Button with AI Mode on Its Homepage
Google is testing a redesigned homepage for signed-out users in which the classic Google Search button has been replaced by an AI Mode button inside the search field. Below the search box, three shortcuts appear in place of the old button: Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm. The I’m Feeling Lucky button is staying. Standard search still works the moment you press Enter or Return. Robby Stein, VP of Google Search, confirmed the button swap does not affect core search functionality. Signed-in users still see the familiar layout and are not part of the test.

Apple Is Building a Way to Prove Your iPhone Photo Was Not AI-Generated
References to a feature called “Apple Reference Image” showed up in a privacy disclosure buried in iOS 27 Beta 5. The feature adds a Reference mode to the Camera app. When enabled, it embeds provenance metadata in each photo at the moment of capture. Verifying an image means tapping a Reference badge, which sends the photo, sensor signatures, capture timestamp, and the iPhone’s unique hardware identifiers to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. Those servers verify that a real iPhone camera took the shot and return an authenticated version. Camera makers including Leica, Sony, and Nikon already use the C2PA Content Credentials standard for the same purpose, and Google added it to the Pixel 10 lineup. Apple Reference Image appears to work similarly. The feature is still in beta and may or may not ship when iOS 27 goes public this fall.

Apple Sued for Fraud Over iCloud Private Relay Flaw That Exposes Your Real IP Address
The Clarkson Law Firm filed a class action lawsuit against Apple on August 11, alleging fraud and misrepresentation over iCloud Private Relay. Security researchers discovered that Private Relay, which Apple markets as hiding your IP address from websites while browsing in Safari, fails when a site supports passkeys. In that scenario, your device makes a request outside the browser that bypasses Private Relay entirely, exposing your actual IP. The lawsuit claims Apple knew its privacy claims were false or misleading when it sold iCloud+ subscriptions. Clarkson previously sued Apple over delayed Siri personalization and settled that case for $250 million in December 2025.

Apple and MLB Bring Friday Night Baseball Live to Vision Pro in 8K 3D
Apple and MLB announced that Friday Night Baseball will broadcast live in Apple Immersive starting August 28, putting a Boston Red Sox versus New York Yankees game in front of Vision Pro viewers in 8K 3D video with a 180-degree field of view. This is not a repurposed version of the regular broadcast. Apple is producing a separate, dedicated feed with its own commentators, Spatial Audio, and a custom graphics package built from scratch for the headset. One game per week will get this treatment through the end of the Friday Night Baseball season.

OpenAI Bought a Presentation Startup, and ChatGPT Slide Decks May Be Coming
OpenAI acquired NextSlide, an AI startup that turns prompts, documents, and research notes into finished, editable slide presentations. The deal was confirmed by NextSlide founder Ahmed Beshry, who said the team has been working inside OpenAI on ChatGPT since the acquisition closed earlier this year. Financial terms were not disclosed. Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, a smart checkout startup that Instacart acquired in 2021.

iOS 27 Beta 5 Redesigns Icons for Siri, Safari, and More
Apple released the fifth developer beta of iOS 27 on Monday, and the most visible change is a wave of icon redesigns for core apps. Safari gets a brighter blue compass with more detailed linework. The Siri icon now mirrors the Siri bubble that actually appears on screen during activation. Settings gains more translucency, the App Store icon lets more of its underlying letterform show through, and Preview is entirely redesigned around a loupe over a colorful background. Apple also tightened Liquid Glass, with the clearest transparency setting now noticeably clearer than it was in Beta 4.

Nothing’s budget-focused CMF brand launched the CMF Clip Pro this week, its first pair of open-ear wireless earbuds. At $79, they use a clip-on design that grips the outside of the ear rather than sitting inside the ear canal, letting ambient sound pass through while still playing music or taking calls. A smart dial on the charging case controls volume and playback without touching the earbuds or a phone. Available in Dark Grey, Light Grey, and Coral.
