Google Replaced Its Classic Search Button with AI Mode on Its Homepage

Summary

Google is testing a redesigned homepage for signed-out users in which the classic Google Search button has been replaced by an AI Mode button inside the search field. Below the search box, three shortcuts appear in place of the old button: Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm. The I’m Feeling Lucky button is staying. Standard search still works the moment you press Enter or Return. Robby Stein, VP of Google Search, confirmed the button swap does not affect core search functionality. Signed-in users still see the familiar layout and are not part of the test.

Why it matters

The Google Search button has been in essentially the same spot since 1999. Replacing it with an AI Mode prompt, even as a test for a subset of signed-out users, is a clear statement about where Google thinks the default starting point for information is heading. Families and kids using Google on school devices or library computers may start encountering this version before the year is out.

Google is testing a homepage where the Search button is gone and AI shortcuts take its place, and calling it a test does not change what it tells you about where the company thinks the default way people will access information is going. This functionality has already been creeping into Google Search (and is part of why companies like DuckDuckGo released versions of their browser and search that do NOT automatically go into AI mode).

I have to say, the mere fact that the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button still persists after all of these years is great to see and a nice little nod to the past. Right now, swapping the Search and AI Mode buttons is pretty much just a visual indicator of what is to come. If you go to Google and type something in and hit enter, the first result you normally see is the AI Mode result, and then the search results.

I expect this to evolve over time, as more focus will be on AI results (and those of us creating content on a website will continue to watch traditional, SEO-driven search traffic drop off a cliff – HighTechDad is experiencing this, as are many others in the space).
