Apple is building a way to certify that an iPhone photo is real and not AI-generated, which lands at exactly the moment when being able to prove that is starting to actually matter to a lot more people than just journalists. This is actually quite a significant privacy feature, in my opinion.
“Photoshopping” an image has been around for years if not decades. It’s part of the reason photographs (like video and audio) are no longer admitted as primary evidence, I believe (please fact-check me on this). Because digital media can be so easily manipulated now, and particularly with GenAI, making this “validation” on the most popular smartphone is a pretty big step forward.
But Apple isn’t trailblazing in this way, as Google and other camera manufacturers have been employing this or similar technologies already. I wonder if we are ever going to roll back to analog film.
