Motorola DROID Turbo Gray “Highlights” – Eliminating the “Gray”

Impressions of the Motorola DROID Turbo smartphone from the perspective of a dad who manages the tech in the household.

I’m starting to get gray hair. I partially blame my kids. Part of it is stress in general. And part of it is from trying to keep up with tech which evolves faster than most people can adapt to. For me, tech is a hobby. I’m our home’s IT person, the person who makes most, if not all, of the tech decisions in and around our home. So, when I hear about new gadgets, I like geeking out on their specs and try to envision what they could do within my family environment. So when I was asked to write about the DROID Turbo by Motorola in Gray Ballistic Nylon, I started thinking about how my family might use it. Oh, and to get this out of the way early, Motorola sponsored this blog post. The opinions and text are all mine though, apart from any specs.

So, to circle back on the “gray” “highlights,” something that seems to come naturally to me, the DROID Turbo, which is available at Verizon, has plenty of highlights to talk about. Some of the specs are pretty impressive:

  • 48-hour battery (3900 mAh)
  • Water-repellant nano-coating
  • Corning Gorilla Glass
  • Moto Voice
  • Moto Assist
  • Moto Display
  • 2.7 GHz quad-core processor
  • 5.2” Quad HD display – Super AMOLED (2560×1440 – 565 ppi)
  • 21-megapixel camera – 4K video, Dual LED (rear camera) and 2 MP (front w/ 1080p HD video)
  • 32 GB storage
  • Weight: 5.96 oz
  • Height: 5.56″
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat
  • Wi-Fi – a/b/g/n/ac

How does the DROID Turbo factor into a tech-enabled family? Well, I can think of a variety of scenarios, ones that apply to my family.

DROID Turbo Camera Power

First, let’s talk about the camera. As you saw from the specs above, this is a beefy and robust camera. My family is addicted to taking photos, posting on social media and filming videos. For starters, the DROID Turbo boasts a 21-megapixel camera. That’s impressive, especially if you are particular to details. It’s 21 MP in the 4:3 aspect ratio and 15.5 MP in the 16:9 ratio. It’s got a dual-LED flash which means it can light up even the darkest of environments. One thing that my kids love doing is slow motion video. The DROID Turbo can do that as well as panorama shots, has auto HDR, and can do burst mode (hey parents, this is great for capturing your child’s active sporting event).

And then there is the video side of the equation. What family member doesn’t like recording video? Not only can the DROID Turbo capture video in 1080p high definition, it can do in the even higher standard of 4K.

Oh, and let’s not forget about “selfies.” If I were to audit the camera rolls of my kids, I KNOW I would find gobs and gobs of selfies. One of my kids even has the infamous selfie-stick. Well, the DROID Turbo one-ups the selfie stick by allowing selfies and cameras to be taken using voice-command.

Rugged Design of the DROID Turbo

Let’s face it. Kids (and adults) are a bit rough on tech, at least, I have seen this to be true. Phones are dropped, thrown in bags and even get wet. The DROID Turbo has you covered. For starters, the glass display is Corning Gorilla Glass. What does that mean? Essentially, you can throw the DROID Turbo in a pocket with keys or a handbag, knowing that the face won’t get scratched. This chemically strengthened screen even has a replacement guarantee where if you bust the screen in the first 2 years, you get it replaced for free.

The coating is water repellent and uses a magical concoction of woven fabrics to make it both durable and scratch resistant. There is a layer of ballistic nylon and even a layer of Kevlar (the stuff bullet-proof vests are made out of) to provide protection. While I always nag my kids about protecting their tech, the DROID Turbo does much of that protection for you – possibly eliminating some of the gray hairs from developing.

Speaking about gray, the entire body is pretty much gray…but it has some highlights! Literally. You can chose to get the DROID Turbo with metallic orange, metallic violet, or metallic blue accents.

Powering the DROID Turbo

One of the biggest issues about tech these days is power. We have numerous portable battery chargers available to extend the battery life of our devices. Every car in our family has charging cables at the ready, and there is frequently fights over who gets to charge up their device. Luckily, the DROID Turbo has this aspect covered as well. In fact, the built-in battery is 3900 mAh! This is by far, one of the highest capacity batteries I have seen in a smartphone. I’m guessing that with average use, you can easily go one day, maybe even two between charges.

And let’s talk about charging. The DROID Turbo has a built in “quick charge” (Turbo Charge) which means that with about 15 minutes of charging, you can get up to 8 hours of usage. Think about that…you can give your kids a 15 minute warning before heading out on a family adventure and not have to worry about charging the entire day! (Again, less gray!)

The DROID Turbo by Motorola also has built-in wireless charging so you have one less charging cable to worry about.

There is another side of power as well, the power of the CPU. It’s a 2.7 GHz quad-core CPU with 64-bit memory access. Oh, and it supports even 802.11ac Wi-Fi routers for faster Wi-Fi speeds. On the go and in the right coverage areas, you are cruising at LTE speeds.

Eliminating the Gray

As you can guess, my family is all about tech as a tool to make life a little bit better and more connected. While managing my family’s tech can have its ups and downs (and consequent gray hairs), adopting rugged, reliable and powerful tech can make that tech management process a bit easier to handle. The DROID Turbo fits right into that mix.
