OpenAI GPT-Live: Full Two-Way Voice Is Now Live in ChatGPT for Everyone

Summary

OpenAI launched GPT-Live, a full-duplex voice model that lets ChatGPT listen and speak simultaneously; no more stilted turn-taking. Free users get GPT-Live–1 mini; paid users get the full GPT-Live–1. It includes nine remastered voices, real-time translation, and a “Hey Chat” wake word. Available across iOS, Android, and ChatGPT.com. Early users flag the model’s excessive “mhmm” habit as a quirk to iron out.

Why it matters

This is the moment voice AI goes from tolerable to genuinely useful for everyday conversations. The fact that it’s free for everyone broadens the reach significantly.

HTD Says

Honestly, since I’m a writer, I tend to type out all of my AI prompts. I almost never use voice interaction. The big exception was when I wanted to practice my conversational Spanish before a trip to Spain, and I had conversations in my car with ChatGPT. It actually was quite a great way to re-engage that language part of my brain!

From my understanding, ChatGPT’s new voice finally feels like talking to something that’s actually listening, and it’s free. The ‘mhmm’ thing is a bit much, but it’s a step forward. But will I start doing voice prompting because of it? Probably not. I like the tactile approach to AI. I will wait for voice until we have robots that can do my laundry by voice command. Until then, I type away!
