This is the Google Home update a lot of people have been waiting for. Being able to follow up without restating which lights you just talked about makes voice control feel a lot less like talking to a machine. It’s a definite improvement, but on the flip side, it may also trigger some privacy concerns, I would think. Gemini will just keep listening for context for 15 minutes. A lot can be said during 15 minutes.
I do run a Google Home Hub with hooks into other hubs as well as some standalone hubs. Spoken commands are extremely helpful. And to be honest, I haven’t looked too deeply into the context windows on any of those regarding how long the window is open for spoken commands. This is a good reminder to review privacy settings from time to time.
Whether this 15-minute window is enabled by default will be telling. If it is off, that is a nice move by Google to respect some privacy. If it is on by default, they may be looking to get additional context from this longer window of availability. Eventually, when there is on-device processing of commands (not just partial), we can all feel slightly better about Big Brother always being there.
