Apple is doing what every analyst said it would do: turning iCloud+ into the gatekeeper for heavy AI use. Free won’t last forever once those compute bills add up, and now we know it. I’m not surprised by this in any way. Subscription models exist across all public AI offerings. While those normally focus on token usage, Apple is folding this into something that its users understand (somewhat), that of iCloud+.
Apple Intelligence via Siri offers cross-device data synchronization, so when you open another Siri instance on your Mac, you can see your previous requests and chats (if you enabled this feature). This is quite helpful, but it also opens the door to hooking into iCloud+ for data sync and even chat storage.
In an effort to keep things “simple and understandable,” Apple might just say that storage now equals compute. I’m sure there will be some fancy calculation for this math. While iOS 27 is currently only in Public and Developer betas, once it hits mainstream and usage skyrockets, I expect to see the new plans defined and explained. Hold on to your wallets!
