Apple Is Quietly Working on a Screenless Fitness Band

Summary

Apple’s industrial design team is exploring a no-screen fitness band as part of a broader rethink of the Apple Watch lineup, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The company is responding to the growing popularity of screenless fitness trackers and smart rings, with competitors like the Oura Ring putting pressure on the wrist-worn health device market. Gurman describes the internal exploration as Apple taking the category seriously rather than ignoring it, but notes that no specific product has been greenlit for release. Separate from the band, Apple is also considering a round-display Apple Watch at some point in the future, though that, too, remains far from confirmed. The Band project and the round Watch are described as longer-term explorations rather than near-term products.

Why it matters

Apple entering the screenless fitness tracker category would be the biggest shakeup to the wearables market since the Apple Watch launched in 2015. A first-party Apple fitness band would give iPhone users a lighter, cheaper daily health tracker that integrates directly with the Health app, Apple Watch workout modes, and iOS 27. If you have been considering an Oura Ring or a Fitbit as a complement to your iPhone, this is worth knowing before you spend money.

HTD Says

Apple taking the screenless fitness band category seriously is a signal worth paying attention to, as it suggests the iPhone ecosystem is about to get a new wearable option for people who want health tracking without a watch on their wrist. Frankly, I’m surprised that Apple didn’t come out with a fitness band a long time ago. They had the technology, and they understood design. And they have a whole health channel on Apple TV.

There had been rumors for a long time about an Apple Ring with health integration. That seems to have gone away. The mechanics of that type of small device, with even smaller circuitry, increase the development and production costs. And you have to think about sizes, styles, and colors. That is a lot of SKUs.

Developing a screenless fitness band makes a lot more sense. Sizes and variations would be easier to control. Circuitry would be easier to assemble (and hopefully fix if needed). Tying it to an iPhone would be an obvious feature, but hopefully not a requirement. If it will also handle sleep monitoring and the like, it would be a definite win. And not having a screen would keep the costs low(ish).
