This is the second time Meta has had to patch a privacy loophole in its Ray-Ban glasses within a few months, and at some point that pattern becomes the story itself. People are innovative. They will find ways around safeguards and privacy settings. Think about teenagers bypassing parental controls. That has been happening for years.
This “hack” was, honestly, kind of brilliant. Start the recording, then cover the privacy LED, and the recording continues. This security update fixes this hole.
Meta Smart Glasses are an interesting product. I could benefit from facial recognition that tells me who the heck I’m talking to, because I’m absolutely horrible with names. But that kind of facial scanning is a definite privacy concern, and I don’t think we are ready to have everyone and everything scanned all the time. But that is coming.
