Google is swapping Gemini Gems for something called Skills, which makes me wonder whether this is a real upgrade or just a rebrand with fewer free features. I have dabbled a bit with Gems, but not enough to worry about migrating to Skills.
In fact, this seems more like leveling the terminology playing field, since other major AI providers use the term “skills” as part of their core offering. What is interesting, though, is that they are folding in their agentic framework and the lessons they have learned from it.
I guess I need to experiment with Google Skills now. For me, Gemini has been more focused on quick research or troubleshooting, given Google’s wealth of Internet knowledge through traditional search.
