Microsoft Launches the $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra and Puts Copilot Agents Into Windows

Summary

Microsoft announced the 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, with up to 128GB of unified memory and a mini-LED touchscreen. Preorders are open now, and it ships on October 16. Windows also gets Copilot agents that can work on local files with your permission, plus a taskbar search that can toggle settings and take screenshots.

Why it matters

Microsoft is targeting MacBook Pro owners, offering up to $1,000 in trade-in credit. The Windows changes show where everyday PC use is heading.

HTD Says

Microsoft is openly daring MacBook Pro buyers to switch, and the $2,599 price against Apple’s $2,999 makes that dare worth a real look. The new Nvidia RTX Spark chips directly target Apple’s unified silicon design, where the CPU and GPU work across shared environments.

This new system-on-a-chip (SoC) will, in my estimation, become extremely popular with Windows users. Will it convince Mac users to jump ship? I’m not sure, but wallets are screaming now, so if a Windows device with this SOC costs less than a comparable Mac, there may be attrition (but I’m guessing not much).

That said, if an RTX Spark-powered device magically fell off a truck in front of my home, I wouldn’t complain. I’d put it to good use.
