Meta Pulls Terms That Let It Use Business Account Websites for AI Training

Summary

Meta removed language from its commercial terms that said it could use any content from a business account’s domains, web pages, or URLs to develop and train its products. Legal experts had flagged the clause as a possible route to scraping publisher sites for AI training. Meta says the terms only apply to its ads and business products and do not change how its web crawlers work.

Why it matters

Anyone who runs a site and has a Meta business account, including bloggers and small creators, should read that clause closely. The reversal shows how much attention AI training terms now get.

HTD Says

If you run a site and a Meta business page, it is worth rereading those terms this week, because Meta backing off the language tells you someone noticed what it could mean. Again, I go back to: who actually reads the Terms and Conditions or Privacy Policies anymore? I know a few die-hard people do, and that is probably why they changed the Business Account terms.

A tip I’ve shared before: you can use AI to get the gist of legal docs. Just give AI the full terms and ask about various implications for your business. This does NOT replace getting legal advice from an actual lawyer, though. A quick AI analysis can flag red or yellow flags you may want to pay attention to. But if you are truly concerned and it could affect your business, get real legal counsel.

This latest from Meta is just another example of how companies will try to get something from you without your permission. Stay attentive to new or updated services whenever you can.
