Spotify Rolls Out QR Code Checks to Confirm Family Plan Members Live Together

Summary

Spotify is asking Family plan members to scan a QR code shown on the plan manager’s phone, which means both people must be in the same place. Members get 7 days to complete the scan after the prompt appears. If they miss it, they drop to the free tier and cannot join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months, though they can still buy an Individual plan.

Why it matters

College kids, grandparents, and relatives who share a Family plan from different addresses are the ones at risk. The scan is harder to dodge than the earlier address checks.

HTD Says

If your Family plan includes a kid away at college or a parent in another town, schedule a scan before the seven-day clock runs out, or you’ll face a full-year lockout. All streaming services (audio and video) are starting to lock down accounts to prevent family members in different geographic locations (e.g., colleges or apartments) from using the services remotely. This is unfortunate for consumers, especially with budgets tight right now. You would think that if a family signs up for a plan, they could offer it to remote members.

I get that this is a way to clamp down on “illegal” sharing with non-family members, but the method for doing this is a bit draconian. Should a remote family member have to book a flight home just to scan a code? There are probably workarounds with some coordination, like a FaceTime or video call, where you show the QR code. But you still have to time it right.

I would expect some families to cancel or downgrade their service as a result, which means Spotify may end up losing customers. Time will tell.
