Same $1,999 sticker, faster chip, 1TB base storage, so if you were waiting on a MacBook Pro, this is an easy yes, though M5 owners can sit this one out. Ugh. This is so compelling for me, since I’m writing this on an M1 (which is still a true workhorse). The chip upgrades are really solid, and the fact that 512GB storage is no longer an option makes it even more compelling.
For me at least, the debate always seems to come down to a few things. For starters, having more RAM makes any laptop much more performant. And it is not easy to upgrade RAM on a Mac anymore. (Storage you can always add via external drives.) Then there is the screen size. I love having a larger (16″) screen, but I always connect multiple monitors to it, so a 14″ makes the MacBook Pro a bit more portable. There isn’t an M6 version of the 16″ (yet). And there doesn’t seem to be a Pro or Max version of the M6 (on my quick scan). I have an M1 Max.
So it comes down to RAM; stock is 16GB, which I feel is the bare minimum (and not enough for what I do). $200 more gives you 24GB, and $400 more gives you 32GB. If you want more RAM, you’re bumped down to the M5 (Pro or Max, depending on the RAM amount). Sigh.
