Elon Musk Confirms Grok Bot Usage Limits Were Cut on Purpose Because Costs Are Too High

Summary

Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot subscribers found their weekly usage limits maxed out, with a few jumping from about 50 percent to 100 percent without any use. Musk confirmed on X on Sunday that this was not a glitch and said the cost of serving the bot is unsustainably high compared with revenue. He has not said how limits will change going forward.

Why it matters

It is a reminder that paid AI plans can shrink without notice. People building habits around a chatbot should know the usage cap can move

HTD Says

If you pay for an AI tool, read the usage terms because “unlimited” can turn into “whatever we can afford this month.” This is just the first of many “downsizing” moves I expect over the coming months. Running a large public AI (or even a smaller one) remains extremely expensive. While AI companies have high valuations, the money coming in doesn’t really balance the books against the expenditures.

Keep in mind that these companies still must make money to survive, and if that means scaling back AI allotments for end users, that will happen.

My advice is not to put all of your eggs in one basket. Don’t rely on a single AI provider or company. Musk rolling back usage is a quick, easy example.
