Netflix Adds an AI Discover Tab to Stop the Endless Scroll

Summary

Netflix is adding AI Discover to its TV app, shown as a Discover tab with a red gem icon. It suggests titles grouped by themes such as family movie night or a horror pick, each with a clip, and you can refresh a theme or tell Netflix never to suggest a title again. It starts on supported US TVs in English, rolls out more widely over the coming weeks, and will not appear on kids’ profiles.

Why it matters

Choosing what to watch eats up a surprising amount of family time. Theme-based picks with a quick clip could cut that time, and excluding kids’ profiles is a sensible call.

HTD Says

If an AI tab saves my house five minutes of arguing over which movie to watch on movie night, I will be extremely happy. I cannot tell you how many times we have spent twenty minutes trying to decide on a movie or show to watch. I almost consider it the previews you see in a theater.

This is potentially a great use of AI. I would have thought Apple would have done something like this with Siri Intelligence on the Apple TV, especially with the new hardware upgrades.

This will also be a great source of information, coming directly from Netflix users, about the types of movies or shows people want. I think that would help guide what gets released and what gets shelved. Of course, I’m sure apps already do this, but building it directly into Netflix is a smart move.
