Instagram Brings Its Edits Video Editor to Desktop to Take On CapCut

Summary

Instagram’s Edits video editor is now available on desktop. The move puts it in direct competition with CapCut, long the go-to editor for short-form video on a computer.

Why it matters

A free-to-use editor integrated directly with Instagram could change where creators edit their Reels, especially those who prefer a larger screen and a mouse.

HTD Says

If you have been cutting Reels on your phone because the desktop options were clunky, Instagram has now given you a reason to try again on a real keyboard. Instagram’s move to release Edits for mobile devices was smart, giving CapCut a little more competition. Now, releasing a free Mac app that mirrors Edits’ smartphone functionality further expands Instagram’s push to keep video content creation within its own ecosystem.

One of my daughters is a die-hard CapCut fan and has been using it on her smartphone forever. I introduced her to Edits when it was released for the iPhone, and she has been using it alongside CapCut. Now she has an option for the Mac as well.

I just downloaded Edits for Mac and will evaluate it for my video work as I bounce between Final Cut Pro and Camtasia.
