Anthropic Launches a Standard for AI Agents to Control Physical Hardware

Summary

Anthropic published a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a specification that lets AI agents discover, operate, and troubleshoot physical equipment. The initial targets are scientific research labs and advanced manufacturing, including microscopes, robotic arms, liquid handlers, and laser calibration rigs. MHS works with any device that has a programmable interface and is model-agnostic, meaning any AI agent using standard protocols (including MCP, Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol) can tap into it. Anthropic is working with early partners in science, robotics, electronics, and manufacturing to develop safety evaluations before making the standard open-source. The standard enables AI agents to run experiments around the clock, reason through steps in real time, and recover from hardware errors without human intervention.

Why it matters

Anthropic recently published a standard for AI agents to control physical hardware in labs and factories, and if that sounds like it has nothing to do with your home, remember that Matter started as an industry spec too. Specs are important, but any time a company puts one out, the debate begins. I think we use the term “spec” and “standard” a bit too loosely. An industry standard requires others in the industry to participate and sign off on it.

It will be interesting to see how far this spec truly goes. However, the other important read here is the bridge between code/AI and the physical world. We all know that this is coming (many of us already knew it). Now AI companies are defining how, why, where, and what can be connected.
