Anthropic Unifies Claude Memory Across Chat and Cowork So You Stop Re-Explaining Yourself

Summary

Anthropic announced a significant update to Claude on August 25: memory is now shared between its chat interface and the Cowork desktop app. Previously, anything Claude learned in a chat session was invisible when you switched to Cowork, and vice versa. The updated system writes to a single shared memory in real time as conversations unfold, instead of summarizing only at the end of a session. Users can view, edit, or delete individual memories at any time. By default, Claude does not store sensitive information such as health data, religion, politics, or gender identity, but users can opt in to those categories. The feature is live for users on the Free, Pro, and Max plans across web, desktop, iOS, and Android.

Why it matters

If you use Claude for work, the constant need to re-brief it on your projects, preferences, and context has been one of the biggest friction points. That problem is now addressed. The practical result is a Claude that carries your context with it whenever you switch between a quick chat and a longer Cowork task, without you having to paste the same background information repeatedly.

HTD Says

Anthropic fixed the most frustrating thing about using Claude across chat and the Cowork app by finally making memory shared between both, so you do not have to keep explaining your projects and preferences every time you switch. This is one of the most frustrating aspects of any public AI with multiple service types (e.g., chat and coding).

I have a process for writing “resume session” documents (.md files): I end one chat or coding session by having my AI create this document, then start a new session referencing the resume session document. This was my hard-coded memory, which seemed to work pretty well. And since I could read these session resume documents myself, it refreshed my own memory.

The game of leapfrog continues between the major AI players. I would guess that OpenAI is working on something similar so they aren’t left behind. I will be testing this out within my Claude environment. But treat AI like a child. If you do, that means you will have to continue to repeat and clarify yourself, but hopefully a bit less frequently. Fingers crossed.
