Apple Music is about to start labeling AI-generated songs so listeners can see what they’re actually streaming, and it is long overdue for a service that has been quietly flooded with synthetic music for the past two years. This is a smart move given the current pushback on AI. I find it harder and harder to discern AI-generated music from traditional music. It’s gotten quite good.
Unlike identifying AI writing, AI music is much harder to identify unless you truly have a trained ear. And some of the “songs” are interesting, and the “artists” are equally so. This type of transparency will be important for trust, which has been eroding over time with AI.
On the flip side, perhaps they should simply invent a new category for the Grammys for AI Music. While it could legitimize the category, some AI artists are pretty good. If you compartmentalize the human versus AI and make it clear to everyone, perhaps it may be good overall, and human listeners could be the judge of what they want to listen to, provided it is transparent.
