Apple Pushed Three Security Updates Yesterday. Install Them Today.

Summary

Apple released iOS 26.6.1, iPadOS 26.6.1, visionOS 26.6.1, and macOS Tahoe 26.6.2 on Monday, patching nearly 30 security vulnerabilities. The fixes include an audio flaw that could leak sensitive user data, an image-processing bug that could enable arbitrary code execution, several kernel vulnerabilities, and 21 WebKit bugs related to memory corruption and Safari crashes. Nine of the credited CVEs came from OpenAI Codex Security, reflecting how AI-assisted vulnerability research is now outpacing Apple’s traditional patch schedule. None of the flaws are known to be actively exploited, but Apple released its first iOS 26 security update only three weeks ago. Apple also released iOS 18.7.10 for users who have not upgraded to iOS 26.

Why it matters

Three security updates in three weeks is faster than Apple’s standard cadence, and the reason matters: AI security tools are finding vulnerabilities at a pace that outpaces quarterly patch cycles. If automatic updates are off on any device in your household, now is the time to go into Settings and apply this one.

Apple just dropped its third security update in three weeks, and it’s moving this fast because AI tools are now finding iPhone and Mac vulnerabilities faster than the company’s normal patch schedule can keep up with. To my friends and family, I’m a broken record. When these updates, especially security updates, are available, install them.

I do find the AI’s role in this story quite interesting. There are protected models (not released to the public) that have been provided to large tech corporations to scan their systems, software, and infrastructure for security vulnerabilities and unpatched or unknown exploits. This is a big positive. But it has many downstream implications as well.

Security engineers now have their hands full with a significant increase in vulnerabilities. Simultaneously, rogue actors are probing and prodding all types of systems with similar AI models, uncovering new openings for hacking. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle. Vulnerabilities are found, they are patched (over time), and the patched systems are then probed again, but with increasing frequency.

In the end, we do hope to get more secure systems and devices. Conversely, as LLM models get “smarter” or better trained to detect security issues, the number of issues will continue to skyrocket. Buckle your seatbelts!
