ChatGPT’s Chrome Extension Can Now Read Your Open Tabs and Act on Them

Summary

OpenAI updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome so it can see your open tabs and answer questions about them, such as comparing couches by size, price, delivery time, and return policy. ChatGPT Work can also fill out forms, send messages, organize tabs, and add calendar events. The sidebar now taps into your full ChatGPT history, and the extension works on every plan and in Edge, Brave, and Opera.

Why it matters

Comparison shopping and form filling are everyday chores, and this puts an AI helper right in the browser tab where they happen. It also reaches free users, not just paying ones.

HTD Says

Having ChatGPT read every open tab and do the tedious comparing for me is the first browser AI pitch that sounds like it saves real time, though I want to see how much of my browsing I am comfortable handing over. Does anyone ever read Privacy Policies anymore? This one would be interesting. In fact, it may be good to simply copy the Policy and have an AI review it.

While I use Codex and Claude and give them permission to use a browser interface to review what I’m working on, I explicitly log into sites myself, and I have told them not to store my passwords (which, at least with Claude, is a rule they follow). I’m not sure, though, how a regular browser extension will work. I will have to test that out.

But this is the direction AI is pushing towards… an always-present, “helpful” interface that is “watching” your Internet activity. I wonder if it is also training itself.
