Gemini App Is Cutting Model Access for Free and AI Plus Users on October 9

Summary

Starting October 9, free Gemini users will be limited to the Flash-Lite model, and AI Plus subscribers at $4.99 a month will lose access to Pro and keep Flash-Lite and Flash. AI Pro at $19.99 a month gets Deep Think, and the app is adding low-, medium-, and high-effort settings that use more of your limit.

Why it matters

Anyone who relies on Gemini’s stronger models on a free or cheap plan will notice a downgrade next week and may need to decide whether to pay up.

HTD Says

Google is moving the good stuff up the price ladder, so if Gemini is part of your daily routine, check which tier you’re on before October 9 surprises you. I guess all of these monolithic AI companies need to make money somehow, and this is probably the “easiest” way to do it.

At this point, consumers need to decide where to put their money. If you are a big Google advocate and user, Gemini might be your best bet. However, depending on your use case and how you interact with AI, other (better?) options may be available. If you have deep pockets, you can decide whether to go up the ladder and get bigger plans with more advanced models.

Regardless, just because prices are going up (and will continue to) doesn’t mean you won’t still be able to leverage high-quality AI. The best bet is to test them out and see what works best for you.
