iOS 27 CarPlay Gets Its Biggest Update in Years, But Which Features Work Depends on Your Car

Summary

MacRumors published a practical breakdown of which iOS 27 CarPlay features actually work depending on your vehicle’s hardware. The headline updates include Siri AI integration with deeper context, customizable home screen widgets, a music scrubbing progress bar, new Liquid Glass wallpapers, and support for browsing video content while parked. However, the Siri AI features and widget customization require cars equipped with newer CarPlay-compatible processors, and many 2024-and-older vehicles will only receive the visual changes. MacRumors’ guide maps out specific compatibility requirements by feature.

Why it matters

Millions of iPhone owners use CarPlay daily, and the iOS 27 CarPlay redesign was one of the more talked-about features at WWDC. Knowing upfront whether your car gets the full upgrade or just the surface-level changes saves a lot of “why isn’t this working?” frustration.

HTD Says

iOS 27 gave CarPlay a major redesign, but Siri AI and widget features are locked to newer hardware, so check compatibility before you update to avoid expecting features your dashboard can’t run. Honestly, I won’t rent a car without CarPlay, and wireless CarPlay is a huge bonus.

Audio scrubbing is a huge plus, and I can’t believe it took this long to become available. Widgets are nice, but they could be distracting. The point of distraction-free driving is to keep your eyes on the road, not on your devices or screens below your line of sight. Voice navigation search has always been passable, but Apple Maps in CarPlay has enhanced it.

One interesting addition that requires the right hardware is the ability to use video apps while your car is parked. This is great for those parents waiting around for their kids. But it’s hardware-dependent, so you have to wait for your auto manufacturer to allow it.
