Meta is pushing a smarter AI into the Ray-Ban Display right before Meta Connect, which tells you a lot about where Gen 3 is probably headed. Wearables were a thing decades ago. Now AI Wearables are racing along at full speed. Facebook has been pushing with the Ray-Ban Display for a while now. While I have never tried any version of Meta Ray-Ban glasses, it may be hard to avoid.
There are obvious privacy concerns. And they are big ones. Apple is also supposedly working on smart glasses. I’m expecting their product to be a bit more privacy-focused than Meta’s. But Meta has a big jump on them and already has lots of data from usability, features, and even likeability perspectives. And that is huge.
I see the value of screens in smart glasses, for example, in recognizing people. I’m horrible with names. If I could look at someone and get their name and some notes that I made about them, that may be helpful. But it is also super creepy and off the charts in invasive privacy levels. If AI interaction visual recognition could be done on-device or locally with a paired device, that might be marginally better. I’m still on the fence.
