The team behind Apple’s Portrait Mode just became OpenAI’s camera team for $300 million, which clearly signals where the company’s hardware roadmap is headed. I think we are slowly starting to see the Gen 2 of AI devices. First came AI recorders (slim devices that simply record conversations, transcribe them, and then surface them to various AI models and prompts therein). Next will be visual, since the first was audio.
We have seen glimpses of this with the various smart glasses, which I will lump into the Gen 1 AI wearable devices. They are still evolving. Privacy with both audio and visual devices is an important factor to consider. The Gen 2 AI devices will, I believe, rely much more heavily on visual input and analysis.
So we can expect lots of innovation through acquisition in the coming months, as it is always “easier” to buy a company with tech and people and integrate (and jettison the redundant people, unfortunately) than to develop from the ground up.
