Samsung Is Pushing One UI 9 to Millions of Existing Galaxy Phones as a Free Update

Summary

Samsung is rolling out One UI 9, built on Android 17, to Galaxy S24, S25, and S26 series phones as a free over-the-air update. The software brings expanded Galaxy AI features, including improved Circle to Search, upgraded call translation, and enhanced photo editing tools. One UI 9 is also the first One UI version to include Samsung’s new AI-powered contextual assistant features that adapt based on your usage patterns. The rollout starts with flagship models and extends to mid-range A-series devices in the weeks that follow.

Why it matters

This is a free upgrade with real AI feature gains for anyone already holding a recent Galaxy phone. Samsung’s software support track record has improved significantly, and the arrival of One UI 9 on phones that are two-plus years old is a direct benefit for Galaxy owners who did not buy new hardware this cycle. The Android 17 foundation also brings under-the-hood performance and privacy improvements.

HTD Says

If you own a Galaxy S24 or S25, Samsung is sending One UI 9 your way as a free update, and the Galaxy AI additions are meaningful enough to actually change how the phone handles photos, calls, and search. Free updates are always nice, especially when they include powerful, helpful new features.

I don’t have an Android Mobile device to test this with, unfortunately. But from reading through the features, this is a compelling update. Now Nudge is an interesting approach to being a helpful assistant. AI is built on being predictive, and this folds into that type of process.

As the Forbes article mentions, not all devices come with Gemini Intelligence (for Apple users, I’m guessing this is the equivalent of Siri Intelligence). I will definitely be following this… just wish I had a device to play with it.
