Xbox Game Pass May Let Subscribers Pick Which Features They Pay For

Summary

A Fortune report says Microsoft is planning a Game Pass overhaul with optional add-ons for console-only games, cloud gaming, and multiplayer, organized into tiers. Current pricing is $10 for Essential, $15 for Premium, $23 for Ultimate, and $14 for PC Game Pass. How the new system would work is still unclear.

Why it matters

Game Pass is the subscription many households use for family gaming, and a build-your-own approach could lower the bill or make it harder to compare. Treat it as a report until Microsoft confirms.

HTD Says

If Microsoft lets users drop the pieces their kids never touch, this pricing option could be quite successful, but I have seen “pick your own plan” turn into a pricing maze before. Traditional pricing tiers typically just added more services or functionality on top of the previous tier; the more you paid, the more you got.

Moving toward an à la carte pricing model could help families or players on tighter budgets. Why pay for something you never use? If this pricing model is announced and adoption is strong, other companies may start testing it and, hopefully, embrace it.

Instead of companies simply losing customers over costs, they could offer hybrid accounts that include only the services customers want and use. Companies would retain the customer, and consumers would get what they want at a more reasonable price. At least, that’s the idea, I guess.
