Apple and MLB Bring Friday Night Baseball Live to Vision Pro in 8K 3D

Summary

Apple and MLB announced that Friday Night Baseball will broadcast live in Apple Immersive starting August 28, putting a Boston Red Sox versus New York Yankees game in front of Vision Pro viewers in 8K 3D video with a 180-degree field of view. This is not a repurposed version of the regular broadcast. Apple is producing a separate, dedicated feed with its own commentators, Spatial Audio, and a custom graphics package built from scratch for the headset. One game per week will get this treatment through the end of the Friday Night Baseball season.

Why it matters

Live sports in Apple Immersive is a bigger deal than Immersive films or highlight reels, because it tests whether Vision Pro can hold its value as a viewing destination over time rather than as a novelty. A purpose-built production, rather than a sidecar of the TV broadcast, is the right way to find out.

HTD Says

Apple is going all-in on live sports for Vision Pro, and producing a completely separate broadcast instead of just repackaging the regular game feed suggests they are serious about making this a reason to own the headset. Honestly, this would be really amazing to experience, but aside from the press, die-hard Apple AND sports fanatics, and those who actually have a Vision Pro, it’s a pretty small audience they are catering to.

I have only tried the Vision Pro once. My wife and I went to our local Apple store and got the full demo and walkthrough. I was truly amazed by the experience and the technology. Watching sports would be amazing. I’m guessing they chose baseball because you can experience the entire stadium in the Vision Pro (look around, see the crowd, focus on a player), unlike a football game, which is very focused on the field. Also, I wonder about the screen refresh rates for live action.

The Vision Pro’s price point is still a luxury, in my opinion. But this announcement does signal that they aren’t shelving the Vision Pro and are actually testing out live action and other experiential events for the future. They just now need a Vision (without the Pro name and price).
