A billion people a month using Gemini should put to rest the idea that Google is losing the AI conversation, and the fact that most of those people are talking to it rather than typing changes what this product actually is. However, you also have to step back and think about how pervasive Google’s products are. The strategy of rolling Gemini into all the products that have already hit the 1 billion mark just makes Gemini more omnipresent.
Think about Google Search (hard to believe there is a name for this action – “just Google it”). Just yesterday I talked about the Search button being replaced with an AI button. Is this considered a Gemini user even if they aren’t an active user and are just using search?
And what about the fact that Apple is using Google AI to power Apple Intelligence, after dropping or slowing down its relationship with OpenAI? Does that count towards those numbers? If not, be prepared to see Google’s usage continue to hockeystick upwards.
