Google Brings “Ask Gemini” to Google Chat, Searching Gmail and Drive from One Place

Summary

Google began rolling out Ask Gemini in Google Chat on August 26, giving users a single-command interface to search across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar in real time. You can ask a natural language question (“find the contract Maria sent last week”), and Gemini surfaces results without leaving the chat window. The feature also supports drafting messages, generating images, and summarizing ongoing threads. The rollout is gradual, with visibility arriving for most users within 15 days. It works across Workspace Free, Starter, and Business tiers.

Why it matters

The constant tab-switching between Gmail, Drive, and Chat is one of the more tedious parts of a Google-first workday. Ask Gemini puts all three in one place. For home office workers and families who rely on Google’s suite for everyday life, this reduces friction in ways that compound across dozens of small tasks per week. Google is also positioning this as a direct answer to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, which has had comparable functionality for over a year.

HTD Says

Google just added a way to search all your Gmail, Drive, and Calendar from inside Google Chat, and for anyone whose workday already lives in those apps, that is a small change with a big daily payoff. I have a Google Business Standard subscription, and navigating the admin console to confirm it’s active is a bit of a journey. But I did use Gemini in the Admin console to ask where the proper configurations are located. I had already set them, supposedly, and this time around, I enabled “beta” features (because I like living on the edge).

But I use a Mac client to use Gmail and other Google apps, which frames the suite nicely within a single app. But I am wondering if perhaps I’m missing this new “Ask Gemini” interface. Sometimes even I need new, shiny things to beat me over the head.

Challenge accepted, though. I was able to use Gemini in Gmail and Google Drive fairly easily, but I had to launch Gemini within the app I was using. I’m sure there is a consolidated way to do this, but I’m not quite there yet.
